I did a 180 career wise. No more Design for me...im a roughneck now working on an oilfield rig and I like it. I work 6 months out of the year and make really food money
I guess there's a couple of you guy's now on the forum that work on an "oilfield rig" you and sevendust, not sure if there are any others, but what do you guy's actually do? I'm curious!!!!!
Boy have things changed! Shortly after that post I went into real estate (before the bust) and while I really enjoyed looking at houses I soon realized that it was not the career for me. It was way too boring and it requires a certain type of personality I do not have. I hate having to sell myself and schmoozing and mingling with people all just to get some work. However I don't regret my decision one bit! What I learned about myself was that I do like retail, not because of the customers or having to sell stuff but because of the people I work with. I work with a small group of people (10-20 people depending on the store) and we all become close and share interests with each other and at some point it stops being a job and more of a place to hang out with friends and get paid doing some other stuff too I enjoy developing my fellow team mates and helping them to grow (at their job and at life). The work schedule isn't that bad anymore either, I have the days off (wed/thurs) I want which allows me to miss the crowds of people who shop on weekends and have the stores all to myself when I go shopping. My hours are good too and fit my sleep schedule (not too early and not too late). And with the company I'm with I really can't beat the pay and having a steady paycheck with the possibility of making more (from commissions) allows me to work as hard as I want. Retail is good but not for everyone and not all retail shops are the same. The key is to make sure you are happy with the people you work with (managers especially) and make sure you like the company you work for too.
Yes and no. Yes for the money, hours, and coworkers but no on the stress and dealing with shitty, cheap customers that come into a fine dining restaurant and get the cheapest stuff on the menu and then complain about everything until we end up paying for their meal. But damn if the girls I work with are all hot and have hot friends. If you've ever seen Waiting then that's what my job is like, but with more money.
lol i wrote food instead of good. I basically drill for oil. Its lots of manual labor with thinking involved. It takes a couple years experience before you can be a driller (I am almost there). It is hard work and long hours but the pay makes up for it. Its hard to explain. You just have to do it to understand what it is. There is a tv show called black gold that shows about 10% of what we do. There is a lot more involed but its far to much to explain...
I do love my job. I work in a retail environment, yet still have to use my brain (computer tech) where I didn't in previous retail jobs. I've only been at my current job for 2 months or so, but love every minute of it.
I search for missing soldiers from the Vietnam War. It has it's ups and downs. Last trip we resolved a case in Cambodia that had no leads since the war, that was very rewarding. But, those are far and few between. I do get to go to Vietnam three times a year but I've got a kid now and a miss him a lot when I'm there, 45 days is a long time.
I'm a bill collector. I work for the auto deficiency department. With the economy the way it is right now, things are fucking horrible, but you can still collect if you try hard enough. Not the greatest job in the world, you know, getting hung up on or cussed at, but I won't be there forever. I'd actually like to transfer to the IT department.
seconded although I'm not overpaid yet. The guys who sit inside and make the new hires do all the work, while they soak up 40 dollars an hour are the guys who are overpaid. Can't wait to be one of them
i work in a quasi financial sector, so the last month has been brutal. Overall, it's an OK job. Can't say that I love it, though the benefits are really nice.
that is a very odd job right there. are you contracted by the military or something? or is this a private company working for families in search of lost ones? are we talking about finding those that ran away from the war?
I don't think I enjoy anything about my job. I think the only thing I actually enjoy is telling a customer that I can't do something for them. I should probably get out of customer service.
I pretty much hate my job, I work at walmart as a cashier while being a full time student. The only thing that gets me through it is the people I work with.
I don't mind my job... It pays the bills, and allows me to travel. But, it definitely takes it's toll on my body. I'm in pretty rough shape for a 23 year old. I have horrible joint problems, and I am constantly shifting sleep schedules. That part of the job sucks! ~Will Courtier~
Wow, I knew this thread was old, but I didn't realize it was from 2005! Unlike my original post in this thread, I now have a job, and like it. I think everyone knows what I do by now, I"ve posted plenty of pictures
