Posted: June 22, 2001 Written by: Dustin Jones Final Words I have mixed feelings on the 3D Prophet 4500. I do like the great image quality and the fact that I can run 32-Bit without a performance hit, but unfortunately, it falls short in the speed category. Honestly, PowerVR and Hercules shouldn't be aiming this card at the high-end gaming sector, it really is more of a budget card. Considering that you can get the 3D Prophet 4500 for $110 on Price Watch, I would recommend this card to users looking to squeeze their gaming performance out of a really tight budget. Pros: + Great Image Quality + Great Price Cons: - Unsatisfactory Performance - Buggy, incomplete drivers Update: I've received quite a few comments/emails mentioning how the Kyro II sucks from what they've seen in the review. I fell that maybe I'm giving the wrong impression in regards to how good the card is. I could see how the benchmarks may throw people off. It really all depends on what kind of gamer you are. Some people strive for insane frame rates and don't care about anything else. Some people are more concerned with quality, as long as the game is smooth. I am the latter, which is why the Kyro II is still in this machine. It really all boils down to the fact that it won't be all that great for the newer games like Doom III, but the price makes it a good alternative to the GeForce 2 MX or Radeon. With that being said, I'll let you draw your own conclusions. |
