ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE!
Not meaning to stir up shit, but this was pretty interesting from a friend of mine, who has an Android phone and an ipod touch.
Background: He's been my friend for about 15 years (Former Google employee, amazing programmer and super uber geek), we took programming and PC repair classes together in high school, and generally I take his word as gospel. So when he sent this I was pretty surprised. He rarely shows bias or says something's amazing.
Here's our conversation:
(10:28:40 PM) him: i have to say, my ipod touch is so much nicer to use than my android phone
(10:28:47 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: wow
(10:29:02 PM) him: it's like cuddling up in a warm bed vs standing outside on a cold windy day
(10:29:10 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: wow
(10:29:13 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: that's a pretty big difference.
(10:29:16 PM) him: yeah.
(10:29:38 PM) him: it does do some cool things, and at least on a conceptual level, they both do the same sorts of stuff
(10:29:41 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: which is weird, they just sort of exist in their own universe
(10:29:42 PM) him: but iphone/ipod touch is just so nice
(10:29:43 PM) him: and it's fast
(10:29:49 PM) him: android is not fast
(10:29:53 PM) him: at all.
(10:29:59 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: ah
(10:30:15 PM) him: iphone has hardware acceleration for all UI but android doesn't
(10:30:16 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: yeah the 3gs is really fast
(10:30:23 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: haven't used a touch
(10:30:25 PM) dan@tweak3d.net: but I imagnie so.
(10:30:27 PM) him: so the iphone can do extra visual flourishes to make it seem like something is happening
(10:30:33 PM) him: whereas android just kinda stutters.
(10:30:43 PM) him: touch is pretty much just like an iphone
^ This last line is true, but I think his touch is the same speed as the 3G iphone, not the 3GS. Anyway, I didn't realize how much speed played into it. And apparently he prefers the Apple interface over his Android. SUCK ON THAT ANDROID BOYS. Just kidding, but I thought it was interesting from someone that owns both.
Btw his phone is the Sprint HTC Hero
