Questions about backing up Blu-ray, and Blu-ray in general
posted by smirnoff at 10:00 am on May 9, 2008
I've been reading through a few articles and guides I googled, some old some new, and am having a hard time getting a feel for where we're at as far as backing up blu-ray movies goes.

Are all the current copy protections already cracked?
Will a backed-up movie play on most players; ie PS3 or stand-alone player?
Is blank media really 10-15$ a disc?! wtf
How overpriced is this stuff right now?

I mean come on, are there really more expensive components in a Bluray burner than a dvd burner? Or is this just the typical pricing strategy that dvd writers and media went through some years ago?

I need an application that's not included in Vista Home, but want to mess with a certain .exe file that is included in Vista Tablet. PM me if you have it or reply here and I'll PM for a request. Thanks.

How hard would this be to do?
posted by ivwshane at 1:14 am on May 9, 2008
I've been running a pc based router for a while and I've recently been having problems with it (clarkconnect). I'm ready to go simple and just use my modems built in firewall and a switch. However one thing I do like that clarkconnect has is a photo gallery (Gallery | Your photos on your website).

How hard would it be for me to setup a server that would meet the requirements (web server, php)? I'm thinking some linux variation but since I suck at using linux with a command line I'm not sure if I will be up to the task.

My current "router" pc is a 700mhz pIII w/512MB of ram and a 40GB hard drive.

Sorry for the crap pics, my only camera is my blackberry (I don't have an ipod either - I suck, I know.)

What is everyone's thoughts? I have not had a chance to hook it up yet. The big heatsink raised up is something that has a casing on it, so no more info there. It is a Pentium 4. The RAM is just sets of resistors where the chips should be and has a sticker on it "thermal dimm" - these came in it. The little things in the lower right are 4-pin headers, like an aux audio jumper. I have a good idea what this is, but I need to fire it up first.
Which Ram to buy?

Over 5 years ago I built my computer, it is finally time for a change...

I remember building my current computer at the end of 2002 with a P4 2.8ghz cpu that cost $450 . I was young and blew all my (parents) money building two computers that cost a little over $3000 in total .

My budget now is around ~$500.

I have a pretty good idea for what I want but I am really struggling as for which processor I want to get. These are the ones I narrowed it down to:

Core 2 Duo e8400 3.0ghz 6mb cache 45nm
Core 2 Quad q9450 2.66ghz 12mb cache 45nm

For as long as I remember I wanted to get the e8400 since its a great price for a 3ghz chip and it runs cool and uses very little power. I never wanted to get a quad core because I want to minimize heat output and power use but with the above prices its hard to not spend $60 more for double the cache and double the cores.

So people know, I don't play games but I like my computer to be future proof since my current one lasted me almost 6 years I don't upgrade much.

Which is it then? Dual core or Quad core?

the rest is probably going to be a nvidia 9600pro, 4gb memory and some p35 motherboard. I will use my current drives/case/powersupply (480watt).
