My ex bought a used 30GIG iPod for my daughter for her birthday....from a pawn shop. The damn thing is loaded with music (everything is hispanic music...and some rap).

I tried iTunes but it won't recognize it. I put it in disk mode and Windows XP nor Ubuntu nor Mac can find it... It works, holds a charge and all that. But I can't seem to wipe it or restore it to factory settings... I've been googling ways to do it but nothing is working... Any Ideas?

The only way I know of is using iTunes.

If iTunes won't recognize it I'm not sure what to recommend. I used to use some 3rd party application but the name escapes me at the moment. Sounds like there might be something wrong with the iPod though, does Windows detect it at all?

Simple check. I've done this before myself but make sure the USB cable is not a "Charge-only" cable. You need all 4 wires (2 for power - 2 for data transfer).

Can you see it as a removable drive in Windows Explorer? If so, try formatting it from there. Or try the following: Press Menu + Center until the Apple logo appears, then quickly press the Center + Play until you see a check mark with a Disk Mode message. Connect the iPod to your PC and launch iTunes. Follow whatever prompts iTunes gives you to restore the iPod.

    Alternatively, try this: http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/03/5771/

Windows won't recognize it at all.

The cable has all 4 wires.

When I put it in disc mode without it being hooked up to anything it gives me the check mark but says "OK to disconnect"...like it's already connected. I'll try the combination of the disc mode and connecting it a few times then try that link you gave me ivanolo... Thank you.

UPDATE: Got into the diagnostic mode from that link. The iPod passed the diagnostic, but it said the cable is bad... so I will get a different one and see what happens...still odd to me though that it says "OK to disconnect" when not connected to anything...

What about the pins on the bottom of the iPod, any bent? Sounds like this thing might have ended up in the pawn shop for a reason.

Yeah MSP, that's what I was thinking. It has some scratches and scuffs on it but it works, just can't connect it to anything...

The jack at the bottom looks fine... I noticed the cable said Belkin on it just now...which leads me to think it's just a charger type cable... and the end looks glued together...the plastic art around the connecter at the end of the cable. I will try for a cable and see if that's it. If not I give it back to my ex, tell her she got ripped off and return the cable to get my money back....lol...

I would try another cable and also, try to clean the dock connector with a toothbrush and contact cleaner. If the computer still wont see it, it is very likely the dock connector pins are messed up, unfortunately you have to replace the logic board to repair that.

Shine a flashlight in the dock connector and look for any green/white residue, I have seen a lot that got wet from being dropped in some water or just pocket sweat :/

There is no residue of any color on it. The pins look clean and in proper shape/condition, as in none look bent or out of the little channels they sit in. I think the biggest issue will be the cable... but I have to get that tomorrow since I am off to work now.. Thanks for all the help guys! I appreciate it!

Yeah, they'll screw you at retail for a cable like this. USB cables, HDMI cables, etc. I don't even try buying them local anymore. $29.99 for a 6ft HDMI cable my ass!

Ha! One of our engineers just walked into my office and told the same story as you. Bought a used iPod, will charge via USB but isn't detected by Windows. He's already tried another cable though, so he's going to return his.

Buying something like a used iPod makes me nervous so I try to avoid it... unless it's from someone I know or even kinda know. I remember buying an mp3 player from Tassia. It worked great! Hopefully the cable works...if not, then meh...

I think you might actually have some luck with step 9 in this solution guide (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369). I know itunes is supposed to install the drivers, but sometimes something screws up. Older ipods used to come with itunes + a driver disk, so hopefully this is the issue.

I found that guide a couple of days ago...was going to give the new cable a go and if not then run the steps in the guide. Thank you for posting it Nameless... I didn't bookmark it so I would have had to look around again - saved me a few steps and frustration!
