Overclocking Riva 128 cards with PowerStrip

PowerStrip is an affective way to gain performance on Riva 128 cards. It is especially useful in higher resolutions.

I take NO RESPONSIBILITY for any damage you may do to your card!

Warning:

Here are some of the precautions you should take to make sure you don't damage anything:
  • Don't attempt to overclock without cooling! Make your own if you have to (See Planet Riva's 486 heatsink/fan cooling idea), but for best results I recommend buying something like the Lasagna X Cooler.
  • Check your card's ram. Look at the video card and on the memory chips you will see a number. If it says -12 don't even bother trying to overclock, you will probably fry your card. If it says -10 you should not go over 125 MHz. If it says -8 or -7 you can go as fast as 133 MHz or faster, but I still recommend cooling.
  • Don't go overboard! If you plan to overclock, don't try doing something like going over 133 MHz or you may ruin your card.

What you'll need:

Now, assuming you have checked the ram on your card and you have good cooling, get PowerStrip. The link below with download PowerStrip for Win95.

Download PowerStrip

Download and install PowerStrip. Take note that you WILL NOT be able to save changes with the shareware version. You will have to reset your clock speed everytime your computer restarts unless you register.

How to overclock your card:

Although Entech-Taiwan did a great job on PowerStrip, one of the coolest features, the memory clock feature, is well hidden.

When you are ready to overclock, start PowerStrip. It will be in your system tray at the bottom right hand of the screen. Click on this icon:

It will bring up a menu, like this:

Go to to "Advanced options", near the top.

Click on "About the PowerStrip...", then click on the "Performance" tab.

Click the Performance tab, and you can just slide the "Memory clock" as far as you want. Enabling Fast Memory timing does almost nothing. Since this feature appears to be undocumented in the readme.txt, I suggest leaving it alone.

You can edit your pstrip.cfg file in the Windows directory on older versions (and possibly newer versions) to make it go even higher, but I strongly suggest you do not go over 125 MHz. My card has literally NEVER frozen at 125 MHz so I can see how faster speeds are possible. I imagine if you set it too high you will have problems and possibly ruin your video card. If you REALLY want to do this, here's how:

Start Notepad. At the top, choose FILE, OPEN, and type C:\windows\pstrip.cfg.

You should now see a huge database of video cards.

Hit F3 and type Riva, hit enter. It will now say [Riva128] or something similar.

Find the line:

MClk=90,125,100

You can change the middle value (the maximum MHz) to your desired #. Don't go overboard! Now when you enter PowerStrip this will be the maximum value for your Riva 128. The first # is the lowest value you can set, and the last value is the default value for the chipset. I think if you change the default value to your desired overclocking speed it will be using it at all times if PowerStrip is running (without having to register!). So, you might want to change this to:

MClk=90,133,125

Giving you a default speed of 125 MHz, and an option to use UP TO 133 MHz.

Also, make sure that under [Riva128+] you have set the same values.

I'm sure after reading all that most people want to see what exactly overclocking this chispset can do for them. Well, here's some Quake results on my P2 266 running at 336 MHz (112 x 3)
