Leaving for Herriman, Utah tomorrow. Going to frive up and stay till after the 4th. First time up there. Maybe I'll come back with a few wives!
Deep in the center of the Mormon empire! Sounds fun, are you going to see any other parts of the state? Driving or flying?
I'd like to see all that I can. The Salt Lake and ??? I'll be bringing my camera gear. Me and the GF will be driving up and back. She grew up there so I'm sure she'll be showing me the "spots".
Oh no, they will mind if you're drunk. When I was in Salt Lake (actually, Orem/Provo, which is supposedly far more conservative/Mormon), I was getting stared at like I was the devil for having coffee and a cigarette. Everybody is dressed up on Sunday and nobody goes out, except to church. Ninefiddy is right, the geology is beautiful. But the whole vibe of the area just feels like... 1896. Oh, and good luck trying to get drunk off of their 3.2% beer.
Well the house we were to stay at (gf's) moms house, is under emergency evacuation because of a fire that burned down 3 of her neighbors homes. Gladly her home was spared. http://m.abc4.com/display/785/story/a31ca5b6e9b261af09d39f0807ee3fb0
We may be able to get in there later today. We are staying at a friends home in the meantime. I haven't seen much of Utah since I got here this morning at 3am. I'll be here all week though.
How was the drive? I fully enjoyed the wide expressway complete with HOV lane that is I-15 coming from the south into Salt Lake. Smooth, spirited driving. And, I just looked up where Herriman was on the map. EWWWW, your girlfriend's parents must be POOR! Gross! The Utahns I conversed with were always saying that west of 15 is far cheaper and less desirable than east of 15, due to proximity to the mountains.
The drive was ok. I drove 10 of the 12 hours. My toes were a bit swollen but not bad. Lol. Her parents run X96 fm Radio. Step Dad is a DJ. They have a pretty nice home from what I hear. I haven't been there yet due to the fire. I'll take some pics. Holy crap there is a Mormon Chirch every 200 yArds... It's weird.
Here are some pics I snapped with my 7D while I was up in Utah. These homes were just across the road. The fire took out 3 homes and a few barns before it was put out. More fire damage. There were 8 or 9 deer that visited regularly. They all had names. View from the patio. Fireman from surrounding cities came to respond. These guys were from Lehi and sat around all day waiting for flare-ups. This is a real-life model of the house from "Up". These funny pointy buildings were everywhere! A random field being watered near sunset. Fireworks above Thanksgiving Pointe. 5 second exposures at f/11 - ISO 100 15mm. Images have been cropped. My pictures are getting better I think...
I only got a few because the gf wanted me to lay with her and watch the rest. I didn't want to be a total photo nerd so I put the camera away.
Nice view from the patio! I bet it looks 10x better with snow on the mountains/ground. Also interesting that they were able to get close enough to the deer to feed them and take those pictures, must take some work considering deer run like hell when you even just look at them. Maybe because they're Mormon deer?
Yea, gf's mom is an animal person and has been talking to them for years. Only one is comfy enough to be hand fed ("pretty"). The others are pretty comfy though.
Yeah index, she wants to take me back up in the winter for snowboarding. For those in Utah, her dad is pretty famous up there in the radio biz. His name is Tom Barberie.
You got some dang good pics there. I liked how the size/cost of the home determined how close the fires were allowed to get to them. I'm against feeding deer, they get spoiled too easily, but damn! Those deer are scrawny.
