One of my friend's brothers is trying to build a computer but he strictly works with maya/zebra and he says hes willing to spend up to $15-1600 for a computer..

everyone reccomended he goes with a mac pro, but the mac pro starts at a whopping $2500 and i could build him a hackintosh if i wanted for $1500 couldn't i? (i mean yeah the hackintosh won't be running xeon processors)

he was also wondering what professionals use (mac or pc) for 3d modeling in the real world cause he would most likely base it off that and is willing to save up i have no idea on this one so i told him i'll ask around and let him know

also for graphics card, he would have to get a quadro right? i've never worked with one so i wouldn't know (are regular videocards like a 6850 not good enough?)

What do i go for monitors? (whole new budget btw) had no idea what to tell him.. but don't they just use 2 regular lcd's or is it something special?

but basically he needs this computer ready in 2 weeks (Tesla and couple other companies are offering jobs already and he needs to start his work soon)

    thanks

Mac Pro is terribly overdue for an update. An iMac with a i5 or i7 will do what he wants power wise.

Don't get Mac lol. To give you a rough idea IMHO. For that price range he can build a killer system. Just make sure he picks i7. He can even use Sandy Bridge-E. The program he is using will easily use Hyper Threading from any i7 chip, and make use of 6 cores from SB-E chip. Drastically cutting his work time. For GFX go with Nvidia not AMD, since he isn't gaming also Nvidia has better drivers. Depending on what kind of model he will be designing, he can narrow down which GFX fits his need. If he goes with SB-E, he will need 2011 chip board. If he goes with i7 whether its IVY or SB he will need 1155 board. 16 gb of RAM. If he is going with IVY, since it has advance memory controllers 1800+speed RAMs would be preferable. 750watt Power Supply form a reputable brand. A 120ish gig SSD. And a HDD of what ever size he wants.

Hard to suggest monitor, without knowing his budget, and his preference on size of monitors or number of monitors.

just got back from microcenter, picked up an i7 3820 for $200 sweet deal! also an x79 gigabyte board, so i can run hackintosh if anything..
he is planning to play diablo3, maybe guild wars 2 when it comes out
but wouldn't running 1800+ speed ram be considered an OC? (he didn't want any OC) a 650watt won't do?
yeah nvidia seems like its the way to go but quadro4000 is such an expensive overpriced card but many say if your running ati, stay away from maya which is too bad cause the firegl 5800 or even the 5900 would run fine

monitor wise, i think hes just going to get a 23.5 inch ips dell monitor or something for like $250

hdwise, i have a spare 1tb WD black sitting, hes not sure if he wants an ssd cause the limited life on it

I would highly recommend a SSD for windows and his programs. Also erase the whole limited life thing from your head. All SSDs that have came out within the last year or two have more advanced wear leveling that make that a nonissue. Its only a problem if you are literally writing gigabytes of files to the drive all day long. With the drive only having windows and programs that is not the case.

A 650watt power supply is way more than enough for any computer with a single graphics card.

guess the ssd will have to wait, found a brand new quadro 4000 660 shipped.

    GIGABYTE GA-X79-UD3 - $240
    i7 - 3820 - $220
    quadro 4000 - $660
WD black 1tb - $150 (we can change it up to like a 60gb ssd and a 500gb sata WD Blue)
    hyper 212 evo - $35
CORSAIR Professional Series HX650 + corsair carbide case - $192
    264.99
    CORSAIR Vengeance 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1600 - 260$ (quad channel)
    Dvd burner - $17

comes out to a total of $1774, i think this should do (probably will get the ssd though)

looks like the hdd just went on sale, so he can go to a corsair h60 closed circuit water cooler if he wants

Good chip, but no O.C ability. Which is fine, but its always good to have a chip whose ability you can boost with time. Also remember x79 board support quad channel Rams so take advantage of that, if you can. And RAM, you can buy high speed ram, you don't need to O.C them. The board usually choose some default speed, but you can go in bios and set it right based on the RAM. Usually when it come to designing, dual monitor are very handy. One really good high res one, and another for other work that you have to do in background.

yeah he specifically requested no OC.. not to mention an i7-3820 for $200 is a great deal.. they did have the 6core i7 for a few hundred more but oh well

yeah his main monitor is a sweet IPS 24" panel from dell, and the 2nd/3rd monitor guess he can go with something from craigslist or something.. man im glad thats done.. now to wait for the parts.. then the real fun begins.. can't believe i wasted my time with all that stupid videocard researching

So I assume you'll be donating some of the profit to Tweak3d, right? :D
