I'll have to check Lewis out, thanks for the tip. I hate virtually every major American newscaster except Anderson Cooper. Nancy Grace = :ak:
He's a realist, not a heartless prick like Limbaugh or paranoid asshole like Beck. He's conservative on taxes and willing to admit when a mistake has been made. Pretty solid, I imagine you'd like him.
How much aid is actually going to get to the people who need it most. From what i've seen in almost all circumstances, the US military or any branch of US government, is not qualified to even utter the word: "logistics". If american corporations would be the ones taking care of the efficiency, hundreds of thousdands more people would get the aid that'll save their lives. How many of those aid dollars is going to be eaten up by administration? you can bet your bottom line that someone's going to get rich on this one. That is the real tragedy.
^ lol I knew you were gay! :anal: I'm curious how fast their going to get the infrastructure setup to disperse the aid that's pouring in. Was reading that there's 2000 metric tons of supplies just sitting at the airport waiting to be unloaded, but without equipment and man power they're not able to get it off the planes quickly. Plus, they can't have anymore planes come in before the ones there leave and there's not enough fuel to get most of the planes back out.
I'm of the opinion that the only wrong way to feed those people, is not to feed those people. The only wrong way to distribute food and aid, is not to distribute food and aid immediately. Drop it out of copters, anything.
I found this CNN graphic to be pretty amusing though, check it out: Faces of the missing in Haiti. Do they really need to put a predominately white face on this catastrophe to get Americans to notice or care? You can bet your ass this graphic is not representative.
Also, not sure if anybody is interested, but my company is matching dollar-for-dollar donations for Haiti. So if you donated 10 dollars, they would donate 10 dollars, etc. If anybody is interested in donating through me just let me know and we can use Pay Pal.
This is what politics should be right now: Good job Clinton and Bush. By the way, the news is estimating 140,000 dead right now.
You wouldn't believe the buildings down there Torx, there aren't any regularly enforced building codes. Imagine me giving you a truck load of cinder blocks, a few bags of mortar, a car door or two, and then saying "OK, go make yourself a house." That's no joke, I have seen many houses that used old car doors in the construction. Doesn't hold up too well in a hurricane, but not at all in an earthquake!
Keith Olbermann is a news anchor? Doesn't he just give his opinion of news that's already been reported? I see him more as an entertainer than journalist.
msp youve been through the rough parts of haiti?? lol so i already know youve seen the worst of the worst.. they coulda had a earthquake 4 magnitude and it probably wouldve done just as much damage. theres so much relief aid shit coming through tonight being sent off, higher uppers are out inspecting and watching the med supplies being handled properly .. its crazy fedex has also donated a million in cash (excluding employee donations), along with air transportation of supplies... http://citizenshipblog.fedex.designcdt.com/node/756 http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900SID/MUMA-7ZR3QR?OpenDocument
I was on the other side of the island, the Dominican side, which is actually a lot nicer! Bad sections of Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Nicaragua... You simply wouldn't believe how they live.
I like how the news keeps showing all of the Americans that are being saved. If were going to get our people out of there first I have no problem with it but don't rub it in everyone's face.
Last call on donating through my company and getting a matching donation from them, I'm going to process the ones I've already gotten in the morning. Proceeds are going to the Red Cross Haiti fund.
It's a tragedy that all those people died and the country is basically destroyed, and I'm probably going to get flamed for this comment, but I have to say... how is this our problem? I mean, it's not like we're not 12 trillion dollars in debt or anything.
Oh trust me, I have been saying/thinking the same shit. "They've been making, as a nation, bad decisions for 50 years. Those bad decisions brought about the intensity of this disaster, they created this problem..." But the individuals didn't, and they're in hell right now. The breaking point for me was the other day when the BBC was playing audio from a hospital where a father was waiting with his his young daughter. They didn't say but sounded like she was 5-6 years old. All of his other children were already dead. She had compound fractures of her leg, bones sticking out, and you could hear her whimpering and crying. And the father's voice, even in French, was so desperate and pitiful. I sobbed all the way to work. We easily have the means, even in our current financial mess, to help them. America has always come to the aid of the downtrodden, it has defined us as a people and is one of the reasons the world used to revere and admire us. Not to sound like a liberal douche but I think it's just our duty to help them. 20 bucks, it's meaningless to us...
Exactly. And if that isn't reason enough, think about it this way: The small amount of money we as a nation put into this, will come back ten-fold in terms of building Americas image to the rest of the world, and that literally can mean less potential terrorists.
Haven't we always been the most giving when it comes to humanitarian aid? We're still looked at as a horrible nation by others (even though they still flock here) no matter what we give or do.
I like how you assume we are always the most giving (AMERIKAA! FUCK YEAH!) when we actually give the lowest amounts when you compare them to our GPD. Here is an excerpt from a book called, "Why Do People Hate America" Some sources (for newer data since the above quote only uses data from 1995 to 1999 to be fair): http://www.globalissues.org/article...assistance#ForeignAidNumbersinChartsandGraphs http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/eco_com_to_for_aid-economy-commitment-to-foreign-aid It is typical american ignorance at its finest. I kind of always thought that we have to be giving the most with what you hear in the news/etc but its really not the case, we need to be doing more... MUCH more.
Yeah, we're stingy bastards alright. We waste more than all other countries use....or close to it. We think nothing of leaving lights on, throwing out large portions of meals and driving a a block to drop off the kids at the bus stop.
That's bullshit and you have to honestly know it. So Japan and tons of other countries have sent their military to help others in need? Really? America doesn't give as much as I think........the country that hosts the U.N. doesn't really give all that much? Are you serious? You have to be kidding or pulling my prick because there is NO OTHER nation that gives as much as us. Not one.
Well, thread jack aside, anybody else wanting to donate and get the Siemens match better hurry. Paypal me, or there's also an address where you can mail a check if you like directly to the Caring Hands office in Pennsylvania.
