I fooled around with Photoshop for the first time in a long time last night. Wanted to share some of my pics and get some feed back. These are all pictures I took and processed.

Originals are followed by the altered versions. All captured in RAW format with my little D40 with the kit 55mm lens or a Nikon DX VR 55-200.

Those are pretty sweet. Do you have larger version of the first two that I could steal to use as desktops?

nice pictures but HDR is sooo 2007 :p

alright, now that we got that out of the way...
the originals look nice as is.. and i found that with cs4, importing a picture and just choosing auto tone or whatever suits me well and it makes the image "pop".. thats my lazyman route.

heres a rev3 show you should get into, this guy is fucking amazing.

    lurker,

do you feel that this day and age digital cameras are doing all the work?? theres really not much you can do in photoshop to a photographed picture unless youre adding graphics and cropping/manipulating

I'm with torx on this one. HDR ruins most images unless done properly and I've only seen a few examples of it done properly.

Your images are too over processed, HDR should be as subtle as possible.

So not true. Dodge, burn, remove dirt artifacts, and/or remove that one fucking seagull that is ruining your awesome picture just to name a few things.

    ^^lmao.

but see this is the point im trying to make.
theres that group of people who are professionals who really dont need post processing.. with a good camera, good skills, and lots of picture taking .. you can end up with a photo that doesnt even need post processing. I think these people are, what i could say, "photography purists".

I agree that a ton of pictures are over-processed. Including most of the ones I posted, but I think it was pretty obvious that was the look I was going for in them.

On the other hand you could probably count on one hand the number of professional photographers that do no processing of their pictures, unless they are marketing that specifically. I always shoot in RAW+JPEG. The JPEG are all I have been using for the past year for showing people pictures and adding to my collection. But any pictuers I want to print I would have the RAW files processed properly.

I know most of this is over the top, which has a ton to do with me not using the software for a long time and just having fun with it.

There's sometimes going to be something(s) in pictures you're going to want to edit regardless of how good a photographer you are IMHO. Color correction and white balance to name a couple. Some camera's white-balance settings just suck so having PS to change sat/brightness and using levels to adjust certain color hue/sat is a good thing to have.

    Take this photo for instance:

Whatever ISO you decide to use some part of that pic is going to be over or under exposed (because of the amount of light bouncing off the water and into the sensor). It's a great pic but needs photoshop to help it out a little.

rolling tides photo is the best used hdr, very subtle and just enough to make the photo vibrant bringing out the clouds

but as far as new technology goes.. its becoming "wysiwyg photography"

in my instance, im a poor uneducated photographer, so whatever pics im taking its gonna be heavily photoshopped to make up for my poor photography skills.

I like the tiki man, the building, and the ocean one. The only thing with that one though is that I wish you did something with the girl. she looks kind of bland against the ocean. Maybe darken her a bit? I dont know.

Definately a girl. She has been carrying a backpack around for a few weeks in the pic so she is getting pretty stacked in the muscle department.

Lurker pretty much said it. No matter how good of a photographer you are there are times when you'll get a shot and you won't be able to expose the entire picture correctly. This isn't a new technique or a "cheat" when it comes to taking pictures because it happened for years in the dark room, it just wasn't as easy or as powerful until Photoshop.

too many people are dependent on software to fix their garbage. (even me)
then when cs5 comes out with all the automatic bullshit, everyone and their little sister will be creating masterpieces at the touch of a button. THE ART of PHOTOGRAPHY IS DYING. and none of you are getting it.

this is the fucking point im trying to make.
