Does anyone have any experience with Tarantulas? I find them quite often in my back yard and I am thinking of keeping one.

Would they be more aggressive than one I would buy from a breeder or pet store?

I have handled a few that I could identify, but there are some species here that I am not familiar with. None of the ones I have found in my yard have ever reared up at me, but I had a couple flick their hairs at me.

If anyone has some advice, let me know.

My only advice is, after handling a tarantula make sure to wash your hands before you rub your eyes. Some tarantula's hair can stab into your eye and cause a TON of pain, and can even cause blindness.

I hate spiders, and if I ever saw a tarantula in the wild I'd probably wet myself and start crying.

    God I hate spiders.

I find spiders of any kind fascinating. I don't believe any would make a good pet though.

Contrary to popular belief, Tarantulas are actually quite docile and completely harmless to humans. At least the ones found in the desert here. There are more aggressive species such as anything of the Baboon variety, but they are native to Africa. The more venomous species, the Ornamentals, are native to India and Sri Lanka, and even they couldn't kill a human. The more common varieties around here, like the Blond Tarantula or the Red Knee, have a bite no worse than a bee sting. It takes some serious prodding and poking to actually get one to bite you.

I don't know what it is about spiders that creeps me out so much. I'm not afraid of them biting me, it's just the thought of them crawling on me that gives me the creeps.

I used to be terrified of spiders, like full on arachnophobia. After living in the Philippines for a couple years, you get over that rather quickly. They were around all the time and eventually through exposure, I overcame my fear and am now fascinated by them. There are very few spiders I wouldn't let crawl on me. Namely, Black Windows, Brown Recluses, Sydney Funnel Web, or any of the aforementioned Tarantula varieties.

I really hope that with Global warming, spiders of all variations are the first things to go.

    Good riddance.

Yeah, that'll be great, then Cockroaches, Termites, and Mosquitoes, et al won't have any natural predators. It'll be great.

Haha it's very true. You can't really see the effect it has on other species until it's gone, or you look very hard.

Damn, I've been watching too much 'Planet in Peril' on CNN...

Granted I'm being sarcastic, and very far-fetched. But I'd take a sprawling, over abundance of cockroaches, termites, mosquitos, etc. over spiders any day.

It's so bad I'd rather find a severed penis in my bed then a spider. I fucking hate spiders so much.

Too bad they'd be the ones to flourish in the warm, dingy surroundings. Spiders fair even better in warm temperatures. Some scientists have calculated that due to evolution, we may be seeing poisonous spider webs within our life time. gah!

Speaking of the little bastards, we seem to have ourselves a slight spider issue. We've found two black widows in our backyard.

Whoa whoa whoa, wait a second, thats fucked up but after thinking about it, at least the penis wont be crawling around you. it would be one bloody mess tho.

Exactly, so after I finished cleaning up the mess and pondering over who's penis it actually was. I could sleep on the couch without out the fear of it's 8-legged comrades coming back and laying eggs in my ears or biting my face.

Why do you guys think spiders/ spider webs are synonymous with Halloween? Because they're fucking evil/terrifying.

I'm deathly afraid of cockroaches but not so much spiders. As long as I know a spider isn't poisonous I don't i'd mind it in my hand. I'm not saying i'd go grab a spider i see in the wild but if I'm at some zoo and a trainer wants to hand me a big hairy spider I don't think i'd really freak out. The same goes for snakes. But cockroaches.......*shivers*

All spiders are venomous to some degree, but very few species contain the ability to cause more than discomfort to humans.

In other indiginous critter news: I have to get a sonic rodent repeller. I have a pair of small rats that someone had for a pet, get loose and now they want to call my deck home. Well, two rats become 6, become18, become 50....
I don't want to kill them, just get them to go somewhere else. I've gotten to where I don't even like killing flies and ants. WTF has happened to me?
