So rather than just documenting my trip here in posts on Tweak I have started a blog to be the repository for my adventures ( sorry tweak, nothing personal :p ).

I will certainly stop by Tweak while on the trip, and will probably talk about things I don't need to share with all my family members who will be following the blog, so have no fear!

Anyways, I leave in 9 days, and can't wait!

Full details, plans, thoughts, and pictures from this point on can be found at: http://scottsnextadventure.blogspot.com/

Good luck! But I'm with Goofus, you're going to need a water proof bag for that netbook to cram up your ass in order to keep it.

That'd really put a damper on the good feeling that adventure brings.

Just curious, but how can you just take off for many months? I'm also assuming this is going to be expensive, how long did you save up for?

Oh, and have fun, stay safe, etc

A person can get by with a light load if they pack thier 'needs' rather than their 'wants'.

Meh, you guys are way too paranoid :p It's not like I'm going to be walking around crowded bus stations holding my netbook out, or leave it sitting places or something. The only times it will be out is when I'll be using it in the places I'll be staying, at cafes that have wifi, and so on. Otherwise it will be in my backpack, so to steal it, it would have to be taken while I'm sitting down using it, or for my whole backpack to be taken.

One of the many great things about my job is that my boss is pretty accommodating. Last year, one of my co-workers took off for 9 months for a motorcycle trip through central/south America, and another took off for 9 months in New Zealand. When I told him I'd be leaving for 4 months, he said "Oh, that makes sense. It's a good time to do it." And I guess he must like me as an employee, enough so that he is fine with me taking off for 4 months and coming back ;)

As for expenses, it's a fairly cheap trip, other than the flights I'll be taking between countries. Honestly I made no special effort to save money in preparation for the trip, but I have had a good amount of side-work in the past months, and I have more money in the bank than I've ever had before. The ticket to Manila was $600, a flight from there to Cambodia is about $260, and some of the shorter flights (between say, Cambodia and Thailand), I've seen for as little as $73! It's a very cheap part of the world, you can find hostels to stay in for under $5 a night, meals are around $2, and bus tickets are similarly inexpensive. Even pretty nice hotels on the beach (which I won't be staying in) are like $50, so you can get by easily on $20 a day, with a little work $10 a day, and you can live like a king for probably $80 a day. This is a backpacking trip, travel on the cheap.

    Eh, probably 5 ;)

Yeah, you'll probably be fine. I'm just thinking back to my buddy Zach's walk from Panama to Texas. He said he got mugged so many times that after a while it was just funny. After the first couple he had nothing to take, not even his shoes!

Well, I'm not saying it can't happen, but if you take some precautions, the risks aren't too bad.

I think Southeast Asia is a lot safer than Central American right now too. Plus your physical condition would likely thwart a lot of potential robbers. Zach's a skinny little bitch and just his appearance probably invited a lot of it. Not to mention you could just scurry up a tree! :D

    T minus 3 days.

I doing final prep right now, getting the netbook ready, getting the house ready, and have some final shopping to do this afternoon.

(and I'll probably have a new blog post up on Sunday evening)

So I'm just about ready now. Did the rest of my shopping today, and have essentially everything I need, though I had to spend a fair bit of money to do it all.

Had a great lunch with some friends, and have a party tonight.

    Yah, both of them :p

As for working out, I am a little worried. I haven't bought any equipment to bring with me, but I hope to be able to do body-weight exercises regularly. Despite this, I expect to drop some muscle mass and weight. I'm at 165 right now and still in great shape, but I wouldn't be surprised to loose a fair bit of muscle mass and 10 pounds by the time I come home. Time will tell.
