Well, in all fairness if I were black, my grandparents were slaves, my parents were lynched, and I was living in poverty with no chance of upward movement I'd be pretty upset as well.... Does that justify it? Not really, but it can't be a surprise. What if blacks did that to whites?
why is there no chance for upward movement ? There is only no chance if your not willing to bust your ass for that chance. my dad slept in straw as a kid with no roof and sometimes no food for days. now he owns his own house has 3 cars put his kid through college and has a nice retirement waiting for him.
He is also white. Go ahead and look up the Jim Crow laws in case you can't remember high school history, they didn't end that long ago. Are things different today? Of course, but racism is alive and well, plus the structures that have kept blacks poor in the past are still operating in some level today.
This topic is growing old, fast. It really just pisses me off altogether. When my family came across these great waters from Ireland and Norway..they were treated as slaves as well. What happened with black slavery was a crappy decision on whoevers part. I worked hard to get where I am in life and have NO regrets what-so-ever. I do just wish that people would stop throwing the race card when they cant or wont get ahead in life. Quit breaking the law...go to school...be a respectable citizen in the community. The only thing holding you back is yourself.
Minority in the nation but a majority in the city. Examples: LA, Miami, NYC, Dallas, etc. Isn't disputing a segment of the population's status as a minority the same as stating it's the majority? If you're not one, you've got to be the other unless there's some majority race sharing that the US is part of. Damn those colleges for routinely rejecting minority applicants. Damn those lenders who check your race when applying for a loan. Oh wait... The only impediment for any individual in our society from succeeding is him /herself. There are lots of scholarships and non-profit aid available to all members of society, especially those from non-traditional American households.
If all races were equal in America, it wouldn't be a big deal that there is finally a viable black candidate. End of story.
Same was said of Kennedy and Catholicism and since then there's been a broader acceptance of Catholics. (Heck, if I'm going to sleep with a religious chick I prefer the Catholic ones. ) The same can be said now of Obama, those of full or partial African descent are capable of being significant players in American society. Hell, the richest woman in America is Opera, an African-American woman.
But that doesn't mean blacks and whites start off with the same opportunity. And you certainly can't point to TWO black people and say "Look, everything is ok!"
Well Juball you got me there above with the reading comprehension but I'm still trying to figure out if you actually believe what you are typing or if you're just trying to prove everyone else wrong.
I think they should have went with the asian mail-order bride banner for this site. Shows there is always room for improvement.
QFT!!! There are more economic slaves every year, we still live in a slave society and we're all slaves to the one with the gold. It's just called something different now......it's cqalled "employee". If we want to live, we gotta do what da' man say.
I read the better part of the first page of this and then got to lazy to continue reading through all of it, so I am going to throw this out here and then leave it alone: GET A LAWYER, the school has actually opened themselves up to a huge liability here, even if this kid was a straight A student taking his word over yours with out any supporting evidence is not a good idea. It also sets a really bad precedent to allow them to treat students like this. In short I wouldn't be happy until I not only had an apology from the school but had also been restored to the swim team.
Thats not racism. That is class warfare and the poor are as guilty of it as the rich. BTW "rich" is relative to who you speak to. I never made more than $45,000 a year but by spending it wisely, investing, never getting in over my head and using my brain I have quite a nice lifestyle, and a modest home that is pretty much paid for except for monthly bills. I lost that job after 17 years, but because I planned wisely and never took anything for granted I was able to go back to school and finish my degree with the worry of the sky falling. I have had people in my home who made around the same amount maybe a little less ask me if I am rich 'cause they see some of my toys. So again it is dependent on who you talk to. The difference between the "rich" and the "poor" is not money. It is an attitude about money. The "rich" use thier money to help make them more money. The poor, well the poor spend it as fast as it comes in. The middle class put some into savings and maybe a house, but the rest goes out the door. You can become "da' man" anytime you want...you just got to want it bad enough and use your head to get it. No one oppresses anyone but themselves in this country. If you use your head and know where you want to go and find a way to get there you can do what you want. Playing xbox360, sucking down beer, watching tv , bitching about your life and laying the lottery on a daily basis is not going to get you anywhere. When people learn to spend their money on other things than new computers, LCD tv's, a new car lease they can't afford, top of the line cell phones and the bills that go with it and actually spend their money wisely like investing and saving wisely...then there will be less poor. Too many poor people want to live like they are rich with all the same toys, the problem is that the "rich" get them when they can afford them and the poor....well the poor just get them and stay where they are.
I follow what you're saying wheezer and for the most part, like you, am a believer that life is what you make it. IE You made your bed, now sleep in it. Good post. That said I think it must be acknowledged there is exceptional cases... I'm adding this caveat to save a lot of squabbling.
It's not a big deal. Obama just isn't a viable candidate. Put Collen Powell on the ballot and watch a black man be elected by a landslide.
im just trying to sway this thread away from black and white.. thanks for the 12 step get rich information, pffft..
