if my falkens are rated at 51psi MAX, whats the recommended psi i should maintain for best gas mileage? Im thinking 35-40psi?
Over inflating for better gas mileage is a myth. Follow the recommendations in your manual / door sticker.
Yah, I was going to say I heard over inflating was BS... When I slowed down my driving style to see what kind of mileage I could get and saw just 1mpg improvement, I was like, "Well, might as well just speed up again" and found myself not being able to, because I just don't need to be in such a hurry, its stressful. In other car news I got my new Impreza tinted all around and it looks great
One thing I noticed with the Prius is I actually get better gas mileage when I'm not using cruise control. I paid $4.27 for gas the other day and decided to drive as conservatively as possible to Seattle and back. No cruise control, 60-65mph (instead of the speed limit which is 70 for the most part), coasting on hills and slow acceleration/deceleration. Used only 3/4 of a tank and averaged 50mpg 8)
cruise control likes to "ram it" when going uphill, so mpg loss is at stake when using cruise.. i think the hypermiling rules also say not to use cruise unless on open flat FLAT land. i just pumped em to 80% of max, so thats 40psi all around.. a little too uncomfortable for my tastes so i might back it down to 35...
It's taken another 4 cent jump here, and shit! I gotta get some tomarrow. My figures have came out to 21 MPG city though! Somethings working. That is two MPG over EPA est. I have been coasting every chance I get.
i think it's $4.19 on the chevron I go to next to work. but it seems to be going up 5 cents a day or some shit like that. crazyness. it's funny, i've been "hypermiling" for such a long time now it seems that yesterday, when I was late coming back from lunch and I had to drive quick, it seemed so strange. i felt like a maniac lol. and my "quick" driving is still conservative compared to most people.
BTW if anyone was wondering what hypermiling was, or how to maximize your mileage, check out this link by the "founder" of it: Beating the EPA - The Why’s and how to Hypermile. - CleanMPG Forums (skip down to Section II - Basic FE saving techniques)
I saw a video of a guy doing this on CNN and it was extremely retarded, the extent to which he took it. He would literally push start his car, not break for turns at all, etc. People were honking and getting pissed off at him. Sure, he got 50MPG gallon out of a standard Accord, but he was dangerous and a complete nuisance while doing it.
ya that's ridiculous. HOWEVER, i see value in that if more and more people end up being extreme hypermilers, something is going to have to happen. if gas prices are so bad that it drives people to drive this way, that is a huge danger to our roads. hopefully something good comes out of it
$3.79 out this way...still not too bad. Got an 05 civic this past weekend so I'm starting to see the benefits already.
if all goes well, I should have my 2003 Mazda Protege back this weekend. pray that the ex-wife gives it back and doesn't change her mind...AGAIN.
it has both my ex-wife's name and my name on the title...which is in her posession. in the divorce papers, she got that car and I got the Mustang. she pays my parents monthly for that car but she hurt herself at work and won't be driving for a while so she doesn't want it anymore. so hopefully she actually goes through with it and I get it.
Hell yeah! As long as I could afford it I was going to keep that thing. It'll be nice for the unpredictable winter weather (plus there's a big hill to get to my house)
Yeah, I do some of this stuff without even thinking about it, such as Rabbit Timing, or just being slow on take-off. I never touch the pedal if I see there's a red light ahead of me. What's the damn point? Some of these people take it way too far, but whatever!
I should put premium in my shit, but I just put 89 instead. I inflated my tires to like 44psi but that's about it. I still mash on the gas when I'm taking off.
