I tried it in my 4Runner, went from 13 up to 14mpg... I'll see what improvements I can get in my new Subaru.
Since I commute a whopping 3 miles a day I doubt I would notice any change. Right now a full tank lasts me about 2 months.
I'm not about to start driving like a hippy, and our gas is alot more expensive then yours is I drive an AWD, turbocharged sports car that needs premium and a 4000 lbs turbodiesel SUV I just close my eye's at the pump and think about the enjoyment I get from my toys.
since my commute to work and back is at night/late night i can do pretty much whatever i want as far as adjusting my driving style.. ive only managed to get a .8 increase in mileage by coasting more often, barely braking on right turns, easing off the line from a red light, and turning the car off when i catch the train and when i immediately get to work., im also driving slower. I cant think of anything else i can do...
I've been doing this to a minimal degree; I'm not willing to be an asshole and block traffic to save a few bucks in gas money. But to date (about 525 miles) I'm getting 1.2MPG better economy than I was before. It's a 5.4% increase, and given I'm not cramping my style to do it is pretty cool. I drive around 11,000 miles a year so I'll save a $104.
I've always driven "conservatively" but I am doing it even more. Not to the extent that it's causing traffic problems but you get the idea. With my Explorer, I've seen a bit of a difference. Although, I just switched to Chevron gas, which gets way better gas mileage than the crappy (cheaper) Circle K gas around here. drives me crazy when my g/f drivers. she isn't a bad driver but she is a typical driver that drivers "quick" so there is a lot of accerlation and breaking and stuff like that, that is unnecessary.
theres 0 traffic late at night, thats when i get my "hypermile on" but during the day, i can almost forget about it.. too many lead foot dangerous drivers.
I, as well as nearly everyone else on the road here, hypermile sheerly out of reflex to the outrageous price of fuel. it would seem that once the 4 dollar barrier got broken, they all went batshit crazy. worst price i've seen here is 4.29/gal for regular. We're chumps, we piut up with it and it keeps happening, we don't get a say in it......or do we? RIP Stan Meyers, some of us heard you.
i drive from madison, wi to waukesha, wi ~60 miles and back again every weekend and i only fill up once a week, i have a 3.0 v6 labaron and it does pretty damn good on the gas milage thingy. i also drive to work 3 days a week ~20 miles and class 4 days a week ~10 miles
My driving varies between 20 -150 miles a day, everyday, except when I do not go to work. I'd use alternative trans, but getting 300 pounds of tool around isn't easy to do. Hypermiling, I extend my MPG by about 2 mpg tops.
I have slowed down to the speed limit and drive in the slow lane. It's funny when people get mad at you for driving the speed limit in the slow lane when there are two to three other lanes to use.
Yeah, those folks blow me away. As do the assholes who set their cruise to the speed limit and camp out in the fast lane. People have no clue how the rules of the road are supposed to work.
I use to get 18-19mpg city when I just got it and was always spinning the engine up pretty high (say 2000rpm). After a while I adjusted my driving style a little bit and now I get 21-22 city. If I "Hypermile" I can get close to 23mpg, but that is just insanely slow. I run fuel additive and Sunoco or Hess diesel. I like the Sunoco stuff because they have truck pumps. Nothing like going from empty to full in 2 minutes (30 gallons)!
I'm trying to adjust my driving style, both to make the best use of the hybrid and to get better mileage period. The Insight has auto-stop, which is nice to save gas while idling. I've found my best gas mileage is around 35-40 MPH, at 2000-2200 RPMs, in 3rd gear. I've seen 100-110 MPG for extended periods of time at this speed. If I had the low rolling resistance tires, I might be able to do that at 60... but currently at 65-70 I'm only seeing 55-60 MPG. (I know this is good, but not nearly as good as some Insight owners) Some ways I've adjusted my driving style are: -driving slower 60-65 on the freeway instead of 75-80 like most California drivers -trying to stay rolling, not wasting gas/brake on the approach to red lights -idling the car as little as possible -keeping my tires at 40-45 PSI -coasting downhills What I suck at doing: -maintaining throttle % among traffic.. I tend to go with traffic which forces lower MPG -wasting gas on hills
I coasted up to a red light, and the it changed I was doing 40 by that point which is the speed limit on the other side. Score!
i already have good braking habits.. rather than holding down the brake like an idiot to stop at the last minute, i give it pulses from a farther distance of stop to increase brake pad life.
bingo. i always find it funny when I am slowing to the light and coasting in and someone speeds all the way to the light and slams on the breaks. ya that's real good for your car and gas mileage
The folks that crack me up at the ones behind me as I coast to a red light, who are huffing and puffing and up my ass. Can they not see the light is red? Since gas prices have gone up I haven't seen many huffy people. The dumb fuckers who drive / act that way can least afford to do so.
