I would LOVE to stick it to the cable/phone company. They have a lock on this market and there are only two (crappy) choices.
Same! Fucking telecoms in Canada are a joke, as is the government regulatory body that's in their pocket. This sounds so sweet.
I'm very curious what Google is offering on the backend to the big content providers considering they'll have most channels lined up for only $50 a month. My guess it that they've reduced their profit to near nil and/or have cut an ad deal with the channels for more targeted advertising and a revenue split.
They are slowly but surely expanding to encompass everything under the sun. To be honest with you, I'd probably buy into it if it were offered in our area. It really looks like they are offering a lot for far less than their competition. ~Will Courtier~
Jeebus, don't get me started. Because of where I live I didn't get broadband until 2004 (not for lack of trying) and then had 1.5 wireless till July 2011. FINALLY someone bought out the local cable company that hadn't done jack shit in the 13 years I'd lived out here. I went to Dish for TV in 2009 after finally breaking down and going over to HDTV. Our cable company had no high speed internet, no HD, and no DVR. Within a month the new company had 16Mb available here, for $10/month less than the wireless, and it's been a dream. They've in turn been bought out by a company that seems interested in doing even more-- upgrading the TV and they claim we'll have 50Mb by year-end. 16Mb may not sound like much to you guys, but it's qualitative. It's the difference between streaming video and not-- even watching a Youtube video was impractical with 1.5-- the difference between dl'ing an album in minutes instead of hours, and big torrents *cough* in hours instead of a day or three. All that aside, I don't trust Google very much and would only use them as a last, last resort.
i wish it was here.. i've been waiting for verizon's fios for almost 3 years maybe longer fucking time warner is a joke
I should probably point out that the area of town that Google is planning to put Fibre in, is considered the seedier, poorer, minority neighbourhoods....
So, it's in KC. Gotcha. On a serious note, I'm sure getting access to run fiber is cheaper in 'da hood'.
