I would buy a PS3 for ALL my multimedia capabilities in home entertainment. Stream music, blu-ray movies, all from your PC to the PS3, plus the built-in gaming capabilities, web browsing, etc.. It's one hell of a powerful unit, Sony is taking a shit-kicking each time it sells one (because I doubt they've made ANYTHING back on them). Stick it to sony even more!
I wouldn't hold your breath for a ps3 price cut. There have been rumors of a 299 price point for over a year and Sony keeps saying they have no plans for a cut. If it does happen I'd imagine it would be in the fall at some point.
Simple, the distance that the average person would have to sit to even tell the difference is ridiculously close. And the 720P was a lot cheaper. EDIT: Try this experiment, open this image, walk 6-10 feet away, and try to discern which side is 1080 versus 720:
This website sums it up well. I could have easily afforded the 1080 but chose not to waste my money. Go to an electronics store and stand 10 feet back, unlikely you can tell the difference. 720p vs 1080p
QFT Not to mention Blu Ray is basically the only thing that you'll ever even view in 1080p. TV and most games are only 720p. You'll probabaly even still be stuck watching some 480p TV because the networks take their sweet fucking time making the switch to HD.
Literally right next to the TV I bought was the 1080 equivalent - twice the price. Which I would have happily paid had there been a difference I could see. On the other hand, the 600mhz refresh rate, rich color reproduction (true black), and the wide viewing angle made the LCD screens nearby look pretty pitiful. I've already got a 42" plasma set so obviously I'm a fan. Anyway, I buy consumer electronics a little back from the cutting edge. And will only pony up extra for technology that really stands out. Bang for the buck, that's my credo.
I was actually just in the same boat as you, and decided to go with the PS3. I'm fairly loyal to my 360, but the PS3 is seriously the best bluray for the buck.
I really like my PS3 and would totally recommend it as a Bluray player. I did have a misshap with the laser burning out (out of warranty), however the disc drive did have a fair bit of use though.. well maybe alot now I think about it. This was fixed with buying a new laser for my drive from a seller on ebay and installing it myself.
yea a ps3 price cut is not something i'd hold to heart. hell, game comapnies are threatening to stop development for the ps3 if sony doesnt lower the price! thats how bad it is right now
Because 1080p isn't necessary if your room isn't big enough. I could have went 1080p, but read up and saw for the size of my room (and the average viewing distance), it wouldn't be noticeable versus 720p. Fuck, beaten. 'Sup 50" plasma buddy?
I'm waiting for the next generation of systems to come out before I jump to BluRay. Hopefully by then HD will be more commonplace.
I watch blu-ray movies on a 32" 720p TV and they blow all my DVDs out of the water. Even my girlfriend who could give two shits about video quality was impressed with blu-rays over DVDs.
i stream wmv-hd movies to my 360, in either 720p or 1080i and its magnificent. cant wait to see what blu ray+a 1080p led, 240hz monitor would look like. this is what i want http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9300605&type=product&id=1218079754022
My TV (for whatever dumb reason) does 480i, p, 1080i, but NOTHING 720. WTF?! No biggie though. If I buy a Blu-ray player and use component video, most players do 1080i anyways...so it will still look pretty good (even with the burn-in on the one gun).
That's a sweet player, other than the Wi-Fi it's got everything I need. And I could really live without Wi-Fi, stringing a cable wouldn't be the end of the world... :-k But yeah, Blu Ray @ 720P on a 50" plasma looks amazing.
