Just picked up this (http://www.lge.com/us/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-plasma-tv-50PQ30.jsp) for my new basement, and now I'm looking for a good Blu Ray player to go with it. Requirements are: BD-Live functionality (NetFlix in particular) Wi-Fi Playstation 3 still the best bang for the buck?
Well, there's this... Amazon.com: Samsung BD-P3600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player: Electronics ...and this: Amazon.com: LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player: Electronics $349 and $335 respectively. I guess for an extra 50 bucks the PS3 is probably the better value. :-k PS - The PS3 doesn't have Wi-Fi out of the box, does it? If not I'd have to pay additional for that as well. It has Wi-Fi too, damn...
It has DivX playback too... The PS3 haters *cough*Torx*cough* will tell you to go for one of those but like you said, for an extra 50 bucks, you can't compare. Besides, you can't update the firmware on those stand alones...
PS3 is a good blu-ray player. I've never had an issue with it. They also release updates to it, if necessary.
If you are going standalone, I would recommend a Pioneer, such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-BDP-3...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247614392&sr=1-1 I say this because from all of the BD players I've tested and installed, the Pioneers have always had superior DVD upscaling, which is great if you don't want to trash your DVD collection just yet.
The nice thing about the PS3 as a blu ray player is that there are frequent firmware updates. If you don't go with a PS3, I would at least go with a Blu Ray Profile 2.0 compatible player (which both of those are). Also the PS3 boots up very quick compared to some other players. My parents Sharp player is slow as hell to boot, I want to say it was in the area of 2 minutes.
I missed the part about BD-live when I first replied, check my edit. BD-Live is a standard, so that all the hardware that supports it will have access to any Live service.
Looking into that one now. In reality we've already got the Wii for games, so I really don't need the gaming functionality. And at least for the short term it's going to be playing mostly up-converted DVDs. Still leaning towards the PS3 though, can anybody report on it's upconvert quality?
dont forget if you buy a bd player from some bogus company that raerly updates the firmware.. because like said above firmware updates are frequent to support more movies.. if that company doesnt update like they should then youre assed out. ps3, because then youre connected to the internet and guaranteed the latest updates and compatibility.
I think it's pretty good. It's not in the league of the Oppo players, but it beats the pants off of my old Sony upconverting DVD player.
You know, Blu Ray really isn't even a requirement at this point. I wonder if any standard upconvert DVD players have NetFlix playback? Sub-$100 would be nice.
I bet the PS3 has a lot better resale value, too. That's a strange thing to consider when buying standalone electronics, but I bet in a few years those standalones will depreciate to nothing. The PS3 will always be worth something.
That's actually a really good point. 5-6 years from now, you WILL get more for your used PS3 than a used Blu Ray player of the same age at a yard sale.
damn $300 for the PS3? I may even consider that as I've been consoleless for quite some time now. Be nice to have a gaming system, dvd/blue ray player, and streaming video player.
