I thought the system hdd for my HTPC was kaput, but alas, noper.

The power went off in while I was out. Today is perfectly sunny. I blame Putin.

I restarted the comp and it froze loading windows, then after a hard shutdown/restart I got a prompt to run windows repairs, which eventually suggested a System Restore restore, which actually worked!

I'd recently updated because of meltdown and specter, so I had that goin' for me.

    Acronis back-up in progress . . .

I like my raid 5 NAS. I keep my music on there, videos, backups of my phone pictures, and the downloads that I might need on other devices. This method has made it easy for me to wipe a computer and restore it quickly.

I have a DS413j I'd probably get the DS418 now. I ran into a problem with cloudstation making like 20 backups of each file causing the NAS to fill up, I changed that number to 3 and it's working great now.

I got a new HDD installed as a secondary, so I could use it for system images of the first HDD. Now if I get into heaps o trouble, I can just restore a system image, where I'd have had to do a reinstall before.

Love the Synology NAS, have a 4tb RAID 5 setup at work, and I loaded XPEnology on an old computer here at home with a 12tb RAID 10 setup for home.

I just cloud everything nowadays. Yes, the corporate peeps have my information. But really, they have it in various ways anyhow.

This way, when I wipe a PC, get a new phone, etc. I really don't have to worry about anything. Everything is available and at my fingertips.
