Texting while driving poll

it also amazes me how many people still talk on the phone while driving, sometimes i wish i were a cop to write these people up!

I let the phone make it's noises. And pull over to answer calls/texts when it's safe and convenient.
There is absolutely, positively no call worth endangering me and everyone else on the road at the time.
nearly all ass-hole moves I see on the road involve some jack-ass on a cell phone. (no exaggeration here at all).

I'll text once in a great while and only if it's a quick reply to an incoming. I have no qualms at all about talking on a phone while driving but I'm not much of a phone talker anyway so I occasionally just let the damn thing ring.

I do my best not to, but find myself doing it every now and again. I will only give short replies, and generally try to do it only when stopped. If I ever have vehicles around me, I won't text and wait to get stopped.

As for talking on my cell phone while driving, I do that regularly. But, I do it very carefully and will get off the phone if there's ever a threat of traffic.

I never text while driving. Now back in the day with my flip phone and T9 Predictive Text I could text and drive without ever taking my eyes off the road because I didn't have to look at my phone to know what I was typing. Now that I've had a touch screen for a couple years I don't text at all while driving or even at stop lights.

I usually have my phone hooked up to my stereo, so I'll just answer calls over the speaker so it's all hands free.
I text at stop lights, and only the ones I know are really long. There's a light near my work that's nearly 5 minutes long, so I'll reply to a message there since I know the light cycle so well.
I tend to use the voice texting built into android if I'm driving, though. It's just so much faster, even if it's not perfect.

I've gotten some of the most outrageously ridiculously incoherent texts from people using voice texting.

Texting is one thing-- talking is quite another. You don't have to continually keep glancing at the phone to talk. They are both distracting, but I guess having a kid in your car is also distracting, or talking to a friend in the passenger seat, or smoking, or eating, or changing music.

If pilots weren't allowed to talk while flying our international transportation system would collapse almost instantly.

So all those distractions make texting and driving or more added/unnecessary distractions OK?
It used to be considered Ok to drink behind the wheel so long as you didn't get drunk.
Commercial jets do a lot of the flying via auto pilot.

At stops I'll pull my phone out of my shirt pocket and see if there are any critical messages, and then promptly put it back in my pocket. If there's something that requires immediate attention I pull into a parking lot and deal with it. No outgoing texts unless the car is in park, period.

What really gets me hopping mad is seeing someone texting their asses off while they have a backseat full of kids.
it's a common site in most every minivan/crossover SUV.
I guess my dad's generation had their own version: it was real common to see a dad driving a station wagon full of kids while he sipped away at the bottle/can of beer stashed between his knees (there were no cup holders then). by my time, open containers would get you into a buttload of hurt and not worth it.....sort of.

Actually commercial pilots hand-fly the airplanes a lot more than most people think, especially close to the ground where most of the traffic is. That said, in an airliner, between the captian and co-pilot, usually whichever is not flying the airplane is doing the comms. That's just a part of all aviation traffic, though.

And I was defending talking on a phone, not texting, though I admitted I rarely will shoot off a quick text. I guess I could ask you the converse-- if the distraction of talking on a phone is too much, shouldn't we prohibit all these other distractions as well?

My point was to illustrate that there are many distractions to driving that are tolerated. My opinion is that talking on a phone is closer to those I listed than texting, mainly because you can still look at the road the vast majority of the time. No one looks at the road all the time. Not even you.

..and my point was that a pilot talking on comms is a lot different than arguing with the wife/GF on the cell or texting while trying to get 300+ people safely on or off the tarmac.
In a perfect world, I'd vote for all distraction to be banned.
Driving in a world that's full of wildlife like elk, deer, cattle on the roads, pets, small critters I don't wish to harm, insane curves, extremely old drivers
and people hell bent on texting and glued to cell phones while driving.....hell yes, I keep my eyes on the road 95% (+/- 5%) of the time.
I'm fortunate though, I'm past having kids in the car and have learned to totally block out/tune out, my wife's constant chatter.
Things will change when self driving cars come into the mainstream. Wouldn't it be a sad commentary on society to build an infrastructure in order
to accommodate people texting while driving?

It seems that I can never stop at a left-turn signal where the front driver isn't fiddling with their phone without noticing when the signal turns green. Till the guy behind me goes into a honk-rage binge.
