I'm buying a friend's old 2500K for $150 and for now just need a mobo and some ram. (My storage is a 60gb SSD with a 2TB spinner, and my vidcard is a GTX 570) I already bought a s1155 waterblock backplate for my H2o loop. I'm thinking of getting the Asrock Z77 Extreme4 mobo for $139 and some G.Skill Sniper 2133 ram for $75. Comments or objections before I pull teh trigga?
i'd just settle with a z68, i think the only difference is z77 has native usb 3, and maybe a little more bandwith on pci-e, unless of course you're looking to upgrade again in the future.. and the ram, get whatever you want as long as its the fastest the motherboard can handle i'm running corsair vengeance ddr-1600, and i'm running 4.6ghz stable with just a push-pull setup with an air cooler
wtf? Don't listen to funkgab and buy last generation hardware, in a few months it will be 2 generations out of date. The price difference is so small between the 6 and 7 series it wouldn't make any sense at all to get a z68. ASRock makes really feature rich boards for the price but I am an ASUS man myself.
well if your not upgrading, wouldn't it make sense to just buy a better brand cheaper? but i guess if you want to be future proof, go ahead with z77
I took a hard look at Z68. On Newegg, even the open box Asus ones were > $139. There were some used ones on eBay but I decided to go for new, TBH, partly because I could use my Newegg credit card. Thx for the input, guys.
ah sorry, didn't know prices are that much, and i tend to just research on newegg and buy from amazon now :/ i bought my gigabyte z68 board and i5 2500k from a microcenter deal for 180$ a while back, thought prices would drop alot more
Maybe I shoulda asked you what board you had, cuz I coulda had used Gig Z68 board in the $90 range. That's an awesome deal for that combo. The 2500K is still rockin' $220 new at the egg, about the same as the corresponding Ivy proc, the i5 3570K or whatever. I'm upgrading from an aBit IP35 Pro and a Q9505 @ 3.7. I ran an E8400 in this rig from 2008 to 2011 at about 4.2. So s775 been beddy beddy gud to me. I really don't play much in the way of new games, still mostly FSX with a bunch of add-ons, and UT3 warfare, with a little BF:BC2, Starcraft 2, and Vessel thrown in. Oh, and Sniper Elite V2. Whatever vid stuff I do is on the HTPC where the E8400 lives now. I guess I can plop the quad into that.
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3, its an okay board, i bought it cause it was on sale with the combo deal, and it was hackintosh compatible.. oh wow i didn't know that the cpu's were still so expensive lol i upgraded from a 939/agp setup, (amd64 4000+) so it was a very very cool upgrade but whateever the case, you will love the 2500k

You used to be able to (usually) just uninstall the the hdd controllers before shutdown and then install 'em along with the chipset drivers.

I installed all my games on the spinner. That's the main thing I'm trying to avoid reinstalling, really. FSX is at least 40 gigs of stuff and of course STEAM is substantial, too. This would probably be the best time to update the firmware on my SSD, which means hooking it up to another comp and which entails a wipe.
true that, you can update the firmware of the SSD without reinstalling can't you? and there are ways to transfer to the ssd isn't there?
No, unfortunately they way I'd have to flash this OZC Vertex would mean the drive would be wiped, even to the point of not requiring the use of Sanitary Erase. For one thing, I have to flash up two versions. I might make an Acronis image of the SSD, flash it, then restore the image and with it, Windows, and then use Method 1 above. Also, it's the games on the spinner drive I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling. I don't mind re-installing windows so much if I can avoid reinstalling all the games and 30+ gigs of FSX add-ons. That used to be fairly easy, too-- back up a few reg entries and my Roaming folder and saves (most of which are on the spinner now anyway, as is the data for Firefox and Thunderbird). It seems like this doesn't work so well with Win 7 any more. I may've posted about that in here a couple years ago.
If your steam game is installed on a different drive you can easily keep them. When i built a new gaming system, i used SSD as primary drive, and my games were on 1tb HD. All i had to do is go to my steam folder delete every thing EXCEPT: Steam.exe SteamApp and UserData. After installing my SSD and OS i just executed the Steam.exe that was on my mechanical drive. Steam got installed and the game got synched and re-authenticated. 400GB of game, and i only had to DL one game partially Witcher 2.
Ah, cool, thanks. All of Steam is installed on the hdd. I used Steam's own little transfer utility the last time and it was completely and utterly USELESS. I had to re-DL and install it all (which isn't near as big as even an average gamer's, let alone 400gb, but still it's nothing to sneeze at, esp when you have to re-dl it)
MY STUFF IS HERE! And I ain't ready cuz I didn't expect it til Monday or Tuesday . . . . . Looks like Acronis has a dealio now specifically for restoring to "dissimilar hardware" where you put the chipset drivers & inf's on a USB keydrive or similar, and during the recovery you can tell it go fetch and install them. I have decided to do the firmware update on the SSD and then use Acronis. The update is supposed to increase the life of the drive, improve performance, and done the way I'll do it, swipe the drive. Maybe it'll blow me, too. It dawned on me I know nearly nothing about Sandy Bridge overclocking.
Up and running! Had to fix my waterblock. No OC yet. If anyone can point me to a good guide or two on sandy bridge overclocking, I'd appreciate it.
