it's a mac, it's made to be user friendly so you shouldn't need tips

The software you use plays a pretty big role in your experience.

For IMs, check out Adium.
iTunes is great for music (I converted from Winamp flawlessly)
For a browser, Safari is ok, but I use Opera. I've also heard great things about Shiira. (http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en)
For mail, Mail is good and comes with OS X. I use Thunderbird.
VLC is good for playing videos

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm a new mac user as well, but I've gotten quite a bit of familiarization under my belt.

it's almost the same

but you can't really customize.

You gotta chose a system, them pick the options available (amount of RAM, HDD space, vidcards options)

The new intel Macs are supposed to come with an open slot to chose your vidcard. And I say some reviews on them, they seem like very powerful macs (avg of 60% perf increase)

Also, the next gens of these intel macs are supposed to be able to handle windows without an emu.

I heard XP won't run on intel macs without modification because Intel Mac's use that new EMI thing instead of a traditional bios.

True. Vista is said to support EFI, so it could work on the Intel Macs.

I'm going to have to throw QuickSilver into the mix. It's the one program I can't live without right now.

How does that work, exactly? I don't know how I'd tie it in with my system, more precisely, which is why I haven't tried it yet. It looks rather nifty, but I don't know what I'd use it for.

It's an application launcher and more. You activate it with a keyboard command (I have mine to Cmd + Esc) and type in what you're looking for (whether it's an app, an address book entry, something from your iTunes library, etc) and you'll be given a few options of what you'd like to do with it (open, copy to clipboard, reveal in Finder, etc).

I don't like having a cluttered dock, so I only have the stuff I use on a daily basis down there (Safari, Mail, Adium, Word, iCal), and use QuickSilver to launch anything else I might need. It's MUCH faster than spotlight, which is why I haven't used spotlight once since I installed QS.

Macworld.com recently reviewed three of the launch apps (QuickSilver, Butler, and Launchbar) if you want to go check them out.
