I tried upgrading my Windows XP Home to Windows XP Professional, but it gives me a message stating that the OS that I have is newer than the one I'm trying to install. Is there any way I can go about safely upgrading to Windows XP Pro without having to fresh install?

My notebook already came pre-installed with Windows XP Home.

Were you trying to upgrade from within windows or did you boot off of the cd?

If you tried doing it from windows then boot off of the cd and follow this guide:

I actually have the full Windows XP Professional CD, not the upgrade version.

there should be an option to upgrade the current version on the main menu.

What may be the issue is if you installed SP2 on the Home version. If that's the case, uninstall the service packs then upgrade. As long as your XP Pro is not the OEM version you should be fine.
