Sometimes, my win 2k computer just slows down, and down , and down, in about a 2-3 minute period, after it slows all the way down, i get a stop error. this started happening after i installed yahoo messenger. tried uninstalling, but i still get errors.

the message in event viewer is:

Error code 0000001e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bf8135ec, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 00000018.

and the file it mentions in the stop message is win2k.sys . anyone know what the problem is?

While it might be a hardware issue you can check to see what program is slowing you down by opening up Process Explorer (or the Task Manager) and find which process is taking up all your CPU and memory.

It's either a virus or a dying hardware component (hopefully RAM).

Here's a good ol' Microsoft Knowledge Base:

well, i don't think its ram, because i just upgraded all dimms like a year ago, and i bought high quality memory, from kingston. it could be the motherboard or processor though, because i used this computer as a server before, but when i started using it for games, and internet and stuff, thats when errors came. i run a k-6 with a standard ibm mobo( i know it sucks! i have better computers (my favorite: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 2.4 ghz 1012 kb l2 cache overclocked to 2.6 ghz 3gb ram, 2x 250 seagate SCSI hard drives, geforce 7600 gs graphics card) , but they are in use for other things ( video editing for work, and things of that sort) ). its nearly 9 years old. the maximum runtime that i had on this computer was nearly 4 months, because i had to reboot for windows update. i think ill just dump it and get a make a new one .
