For the last couple of years I've been running a Linksys BEFSR41 Router and a Linksys WAP54G Wireless Access Point. Hardwired to the router I have the access point, XBOX 360 and 2 PC's. Utilizing the wireless access point I have 2 PS3's, 2 Linux Laptops, 2 XP laptops and 1 PC.

Will upgrading either or both give me an increase in speed or stability? I'm not having any problems right now but, maybe I could be getting more bang for my buck and just don't know it! What say you?

edit: i re-read your thread and..

if you wanna consolidate wires and shit, upgrade to a wrt54g
that will basically be your only device as its a router and access point.
then you can custom firmware flash it..

all that N spec is useless right now

"Custom firmware flash?" So then there's no advantage to upgrading right?

Fair enough. I was just curious if my stuff was outdated and if by upgrading, would end up with a faster connection or something.

802.11 N is awesome, I don't know what you're smoking Torx. Better range, beter coverage, better throughput at every distance. You just have to make sure you buy the right access point, and here it is:

I've had bad experience with D-link. I have a linksys wireless router at home and don't have any issues with at all. Although it doesn't have N, (didn't come out when I was purchasing a wireless router) it works really well and haven't had any issues with it.

Learn something

I've got a Linksys now, but the D-Link linked above is pretty highly rated. My old D-Link B lasted a good long time, but admittedly it did eventually die. Albeit it was sitting in my hot / freezing garage without a surge protector for 2 years.

I think a good UPS is the most important piece of equipment for a computer system.

I have one of the WRT54G's and it is AWESOME. The open source firmware is great.

I make myself laugh.

I've had issues with all major residential-based wireless routers/waps. DLink and Linksys have been the best of the lot that I've seen. Hell, US Robotics routers require firmware updates for vista!?!

out of the box, most routers including linksys lock up after numerous ip connections have been made this is common when using torrent clients.. theres a tweak for this but you need custom firmware to adjust it.

i think G is still efficient for any residential home. Last thing i need is a double of distance of people trying to tamper with my network (even though i got it locked down real good). Most people dont know how to secure their own wireless network and if they purchase an N device.. shiiittt. mind as well hang it up.

with custom firmware you can also increase the xmit power thus increasing distance and speed quality with the cost of heat and possible lower lifespan. there multiple other little tweaks as well.

Now, if his situation was.. "i need a wireless router for a commercial building" then yea, i would recommend N.
