I’m going to upgrade my laptop with a 7200RPM 320GB drive, and I’m just going to image from the existing to the new. Which will be easy because my laptop has dual SATA bays, plus ESATA. Anyway, what’s a good free tool to use? I’ve got Ghost around here somewhere.

List of disk cloning software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've never cloned a drive before, so this is all I could find.

Very interesting. I tried looking around the site, but couldn't find the answer. Does it support mounting the image from within Windows (or anything else?) and retrieving individual files without restoring the entire image?

This would be good to use at work when someone gets a new PC. Create an image of their old one, reuse the old one immediately, and keep the image around for a few weeks in case we missed transferring any files over.

When my new hard drive arrives, I was planning on using DriveImage XML, and using the "copy direct from drive to drive" function. This way I can move stuff from my smaller partitions to new bigger partitions on the new HDD.

My old HDD is making me nervous, since all the other parts in my computer seem to be expiring. Also I need the extra room.

I did order a 4 gig USB flash drive, just in case I have to do this another way, however. I'd prefer not to; the CloneZilla Live explanations make my brain hurt.

Don't most hard disk manufactures have free cloning software?
