My NEC FE990 just started making this buzzing sound from its power supply. I tried changing the rez, hertz, and brightness/contrast. As well as tried a few degosses(sp?)

Is it hanging on buy a thread??? Its only like 1 year old.

I would check on the warranty and see if you can take advantage of that.

it might be the tranceformer inside or a capasitor. Is there a burning smell?

From NEC's website:

Title: Monitor makes hissing noise during operation

Symptom: Monitor makes humming noise when ON

Cause: Power supply noise

Fix:

1. This is a normal switching power supply noise (some monitors may be louder than others). There is no problem with the monitor.

2. If noise level seems excessive, take unit to an Authorized Service Center. For the nearest ASC, contact Technical Support at 800-344-6352.

Since it wasn't as loud before I'd suggest calling that number if you're concerned.

There's no such thing as changing the hertz on an LCD monitor, therefore it must be a CRT (also, what bearing does that have on the powersupply?).

If there was a burning smell I don't think his monitor would be working anymore.

Ok, I think this has gone on long enough. I'm not one to flame for no reason, but you are pissing me off royally. You add nothing intelligent to any thread, your spelling and punctuation is atrocious, and YOUR SIG IS STILL TOO FUCKING BIG. Moron.

Although he couldn't spell transformer he actually is right about it being a possible bad component. A bad transformer coil in the monitor can cause a whining noise.

and capacitors can leak making hissing noises... or lol... the transformer could be going bad and putting just a little too much voltage through forcing a capacitor to overload and leak causing both a humming and a hissing

Transformers only make noise when they go from their robot form to their vehicle form and vice-versa. It sounds more like this than hissing though. If you hear anything like that, just tell that little bastard to get our of your monitor.
