so I dual boot XP and Vista. I have a fairly old computer (see my sig). obviously for my specs, I can't play the latest and greatest games. I really only play WoW these days though. It kinda sucks to dual-boot. I'd like to use Vista primarily as, well it's going to be the standard. When I played WoW in Vista a while back, performance was quite a bit worse than in XP.

I know Vista takes up a lot more memory than XP. Now my question is, why would WoW run slower in Vista? Is it because I don't have enough memory? I would think 2GB would be enough but if it's not and upgrading to like 4GB would make a big difference, that's a cheap upgrade. I haven't checked though on how much memory is being used though when I have WoW running as well. Is it simply because the drivers for Vista aren't quite as good?

I'd like to get down to just use one OS because it's easier than to have to reboot anytime I need to do something else. But if Vista isn't going to cut it, I'll have to stay with XP I guess. Suggestions?

2gb of old DDR is expensive compared to DDR2. I would hate to see you put money into that old computer. I would wait, but thats just me.

ya that is true, which sucks. reguardless though, do you think the slowdown in games in Vista is due to lack of memory or some other reason?

To play wow you have a really good computer. It doesnt take much compared to other games to play wow at a good frame rate.

If you dont have the 64bit of vista 4 gig is pointless. I dont really see 3 gigs doing that much.

I would make an educated guess and say its your processor.

3 gigs on Vista 32 is about all you can push... if you upgrade to Vista 64, 4 gigs will be read and allocated accordingly.

Now... Vista,in general, is a whore in regards to resources so running games with your rig would definitely lag a bit.

Let me get this straight, you are dual booting with XP and Vista and a game is running slower in one OS, and you are thinking of spending money making it faster in vista when you can just boot up into XP and play it?

yes 'cause dual booting sucks. it's not ideal. it's a pain in the ass to have to restart when i want to do another task. it would be nice to just boot into one OS.

From experience, Vista is a pig! It's alway "indexing" and shit. There are way too many operations going on in the background. Sure, it may be the only way to experience DX10, but that fact is negated by all the bloat and background shit running 98% of the time. I have Vista ultimate 64 bit with 4 gigs and C2Duo 6800, it still bogs down when all the various "indexings are running. Save yourself some money and grief, stay with XP as long as you can. DX10 isn't worth it yet.

I would just stick with xp. You are always saying you have an extremely tight budget and are strapped for cash. Spending money so you can have vista eye candy or don't have to take 20 seconds to reboot seems pretty obscure.

I'm trying to evolve.

I liked Vista visually, but it just sucks for gaming. I like shooters and Vista locks mice at low DPI's and USB polling rates. If you're used to those and switch to Vista it's like a night and day difference. I gave it a month and said fuck it.

I don't know why they keep fucking up how mice work. First XP had mouse acceleration that no one wanted or needed, and instead of fixing it they just created more issues for enthusiasts.

I'm gonna skip Vista and wait for Windows 7 where hopefully Microsoft does it right with starting from scratch or close to scratch I think they started with a kernel that is small.

A lot of corporations have just recently transfered to Windows within the last 2 years so I doubt Vista will be an impact in the corporate world.

Microsoft has extended sales of XP until the release of Windows 7. They finally got the hint that we don't want to have to upgrade our computers to do the exact same things we're doing now. There just wasn't enough incentive to move to vista. It does all the things XP does, only a little bit better, and a little bit flashier. Nothing new and innovative was added aside from a few flashy graphics things.

They've only extended XP sales on the thin-client laptops to compete with linux. June 30th is still the last day it can be shipped from MS.

Not entirely true.

Ballmer: Buy Vista, Downgrade to XP for Free || The Mac Observer

"Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, responding to a question about the support for XP off the shelf, said that customers can buy Vista, then downgrade to XP for free. "I don't know how you can do better than getting both," Mr. Ballmer said Tuesday in Washington D.C."
