| Globe Trekker | 1) I keep hearing about OSX 10.5, aka "Leopard". Since this in an incremental update, like Windows XP SP2, will it be a free download or do they expect me for fork over cash for it? 2) I've now got two brand new Apple 256MB DDR2 SO DIMMS. Think it would be worth selling them? I can't imagine they're worth much... |

| Tweak Minion | 1. Leopard is not a incremental update, its new. The current OSX operating system is 10.4.9. Before that it was called 10.3. 2. I don't think they are worth much. I think they sold for like 15 bucks on Ebay. |

| Jolly Bolly Fo-Folly | Pretty much what he said. Every 10.x update has been a paid update. But unlike Microsoft and their Service packs, the amount of changes are almost on par with their past OS complete upgrades. I guess the only things that dont change in most cases are the overall look and functionality. But if you get down to the nitty gritty, specially 10.5, there are some big subtle changes to the system. Nice thing is though, Apple doesnt use serial numbers. |

| Gold standard! | Apple.com lists the upgrade as 129.99 for "Tiger" atm. As for serial numbers, pretty sure it's ROM specific... |

| Jolly Bolly Fo-Folly | Lets just say that as long as you have a valid mac, you can upgrade. Thats how its been since the beginning, I doubt they would change that. |

| Tweak Minion | I honestly think they don't make much money off the OS... the hardware is where they profit the most. |

| Globe Trekker | Yep, $129. I was at the Apple store earlier, and that Apple Care extended warranty is actually a pretty sweet deal. $129, and it covers everything including the battery for 3 years? Done deal. And the girl that helped me was smoking hot... EDIT: Turns out the extended warranty is $249, which is not quite such a good deal. I dunno, I'm torn... EDIT EDIT: And it doesn't cover the battery! That hot bitch lied to me... Quote:

| Gold standard! | Get the warranty. Apple makes great machines but just like anything with moving parts, they do break. (Hint, there's a section on Apple.com for refurbished Macs that should say something.) |

| jive turkey | applecare will fuck you on stupid shit though, like well known defects for example, on my g4 powerbook, the models tend to have the magnetic latch break. not covered under apple care. mine broke about 2 months after I got it - apple tells me "normal wear and tear"...bah |

| Globe Trekker | How in the fuck do you break a magnetic latch? Seriously? |

| jive turkey | I don't know. if you google about it though, it happens a bunch. Also, they try and get you to replace the whole lower shell, which totals about $170 for parts alone. My buddy works at compusa and said that they can order the latching mechanism from apple for something like $50, or even use a chinese ripoff piece for less than $40 installed. I love my powerbook, but I haven't been a fan of applecare since I got it. |

| Tweak Minion | I didn't buy and Apple Care. I'm taking a risk but I have trust in my machine. (Knocks on Wood) |

| Jolly Bolly Fo-Folly | A friend of mine was dumb and spill liquid on his macbook recently. It only broke the optical drive and the down arrow on the keyboard. Id say thats pretty lucky, as the cpu is housed near there. I myself have slightly dropped mine twice. Not full off drops above the ground, but more slid off my lap style. I take it to work, and use a pillow under it since I dont have anything else around to keep it up and off my lap. Well the first time I accidentally dozed off and it slid down and hit the ground. That pissed me off, but overall everything was fine, just a little scuff mark where it get the ground near the back of the bottom case. The second time though, I didnt notice any damage, until a few days ago, right above the optical drive in that corner, its popped up. Not a whole lot, but I cant get it to go back in. Im torn about taking it apart to fix it as I dont want to void my warranty. It has had a backlight issue on the lcd since Ive had it, and I just never have sent it in, because its the only thing I use atm, if I decide to send it in, and it looks like Ive dropped it, I know they will claim its my fault even though it was pre-existing. Although Ive been getting used to the backlight issue, and have figured out ways to force it to come on. |
