im looking for a desktop rack that i can pop in 2-4 sata hdds, wall powered, and be connected to pc through usb

is there such a thing?

ive seen the desktop one hdd plug in, but that only allows one 3.5 or laptop hdd to be popped in. im looking for a standup that holds 2-4

im seriously thinking about downsizing my computer needs and creating a netbook environment thats modular, cost efficient, power efficient, and somewhat mobile.

I think you talking about External Enclosure... may be some thing like: Newegg.com - AMS DS-3141SSBK Steel / Aluminum 3.5" SATA 4-IN-3 SATA Module - External Enclosures
Data Robotics Drobo (4-Bay ) Storage Robot Enclosure - USB 2.0, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 (Hard Drives Not Included) DR04DD10 at TigerDirect.com

on a mission to spread linux to every one

I've used the Iomega 150d NAS that has 4 hot swap raid 5 drives...I think it's 1.5 TB. Probably not what you're looking for though

You could buy 2x 1.5tb drives for $190 each so for less than that stupid nas box you can buy 3tb.

You dont have a spare/old computer you can pop a few drives in?

The Drobo is cool but slow as shit, in addition to being fucking expensive.

Why not just get a couple normal USB enclosures rather than one big one?

Hmm...Thanks Ali. I just recently got my A+, and in my class they told us USB 2.0 was faster and Firewire was a niche thing. I stand corrected!

Yeah, it was news to me too. I always knew firewire was technically faster at transferring video but i guess its better at everything.
