okay guys some kid came to me and asked me if i can fix his comp, he brought it over, well its asselmbled by him i guess, he says he bought a barebone, he broke his heatsink, but he got another one. the specs are amd athlon xp 3000+ duron, 512mb ultra ram, some soyo case, 80 gb hd, and a 9800 pro. When i took off his heatsink, he had no thermal paste, and the duron, where you put the thermal paste looks a bit chipped, i dunno what he did, he also mounted the motherboard incorrectly, i tried to remount it, but it wont allign perfectly with the case, when i tried booting it, just with the cpu hooked up to the motherboard with ram, i heard some tink tink sounds coming from cpu or something, ive never used spacers, but i think i might have to so what do you guys think?

Chances are the chipped cpu means it's done for.

I'm not sure why you are having trouble mounting the mobo but to elminate any shorts remove the mobo from the case and boot it while it's outside the case.

spacers as in the 1/4" inch or so copper lookin risers? you HAVE to use those (atleast in the 10+ pc's i've built), or the i/o ports will never line up, as well as the slot cards...

not to mention the fact your board isn't raised off the metal tray thus creating a virtual circuit between every single solder point on the back of the board...

Aren't those called risers? Spacers should be either washers or the little paper washers that go between the screw and mobo.

Risers are a must and if those weren't used then the board proabably is fried. If you didn't use the spacers then you might be ok but it depends on the mobo. Most new mobo's have an area around the screw that acts as a spacer.
