| is fucking awesome | ok so im a senior in high school and ill be going away to school in the end of august...now both my brother and sister have gotten laptops for college...and i know the first two years with it are going to be fine....but im worried about the last 2 years....just because i know that after 2 years it's going to be slow as shit...and i really dont know how to update a laptop....im not that smart about computers but i can update parts on a tower.... choice 1 - kick ass laptop.... choice 2 - (the one im leaning towards) desktop pc.... flat screen monitor (because the college dorm desks are tiny) kick ass parts which can be upgraded in time much easier... better choice in the long run.... i used to be big into pc gaming but lately i just want to play every once in a while...so for those few times in college when i want to play ..say cs or css or cz then i def want a desktop... but im VERY OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS...!!!! |

| Member | go desktop.......I have both, but I wouldnt be able to live without the desktop. Oh and unless you type really fast, taking notes in class on a laptop isn't even worth it, and that's on top of the fact that you can't draw any diagrams and such on a laptop unless its a tablet PC. Get the desktop, it's the better way to go. |

| Senior Member | unless you can get a tablet PC a laptop aint worth it imho, it only distracted me in class if i tried to use it for stuff. The only times it came in REALLY handy was when i was in my junior/senior year and writting longer papers and i could take it anywhere...boot it up whenever...and write a page, but even then plugging it in and carrying it around just got annoying. I would've loved a tablet pc though just cause they work so well for taking notes and seemed once i trained one to recognize my writting worked pretty darn well. I say your should probobly go with as portable a desktop as possible...talking SFF here cause you move like every other semester, or if u want to take it home you can, but for the most part just have it sitting there in dorm ready to go for ya. |

| infinite resolution | I have never needed a notebook in school yet, nor have I really wanted one. I can only think of one person in any of my classes that has brought a computer to class. The only reason I see to get a notebook is if you want to type a paper sitting in the student center, lawn, whatever. |

| Cheap Bastard | If I had the money, I'd get a top-of-the-line laptop with high-end graphics and an external sound card with Klipsch speakers. Slick! I've started to dislike desktops; they're too clunky.... You should take your desktop apart and sell it by piece. Use that money plus whatever money you've already got to get a cool system. That's assuming your machine is relatively old, of course. |

| Member | Personally, I chose to stick with my desktop (I actually had the choice of having both but didn't want to waste the money). I'm not saying a laptop isn't a convenient choice, because it is a great thing to have, especially if you are doing work and aren't in your dorm (which can be very often for some). I know a couple of people who have gone the laptop-only route and it has worked well (and they can still play WC3 and KOTOR all they want). For me, however, a desktop just has too much value and flexibility as a computer (if not portability). |

| Member | Laptop. Heres my 2 cents on why. It can go everywhere with you. Ex. Im not in college at the moment but I am going back. I take the train to work and home. I could if I had any to type be typing papers on the train. At lunch I sit outside in the air of chicago and watch the women go by while typing away at my laptop. The alienware logo is a great conversation starter. Yes it does require you to keep an eye on it more than normal but after a while it becomes just like an oversized wallet or cellphone. You feel naked if you dont have that bag with you. Get the laptop. |

Ward won't be on a train during college, he will mostely be walking around campus. At lunch he'll be with his friends... he's a pretty social guy, i dont think ward would bust out a laptop in the middle of a crowded dinning hall, esspecially as a freshman I know 3 poeple that are computer buff's that have laptops in college and they wished they got a super beffy edit:desktopinstead of a nice laptop... but you do bring up good points | |

| Member | Ok true. My laptop is my workhorse. It is the best thing I have bought in the past few years. As for the social scene Im not lacking on that front, But there are some situations where the laptop has come in handy. Waiting for the plane at the airport, Waiting for my car to be repaired at Jiffy lube. I dont just pull out my laptop when im out with friends and start typing away but it is nice to have it when we are all out and having fun. I can download the images from my camera and start editing them or just make more room on my camera for more movies or such. Then its nice when Im waiting for my friends to get done with something like a phone call to an ex or a parent, I dont have to sit there and listen uncomfortably. Also for me, Since Im living in a studio apt. I dont have much room for a desktop. My desk serves as my Desk, Dining room table and work bench. For me the laptop seems the better choice, cause its better to have one and not need it then to need it and not have it. ---Yes I stole that quote but it fits here. |
