| | Remote Connect from Windows | permalink #1 |
| I grew up here | what's the best way to remotely connect to my linux desktop from a windows computer? I tried Cygwin/X, but that was far too slow to be useful. I then tried mingw, but couldn't figure out how to get an xterm up so I could actually ssh to my home computer. I suppose my last alternative is VNC? Anybody have any experience with the various vnc servers/clients? | |

| Rogue One | I've used TightVNC between Windows/Linux before and it works fine. If you just want to SSH into your Linux box, all you should need is Putty. You can also use this package to install a minimal Cygwin setup on your Windows box and run an SSH server on it if you want. | |

| I grew up here | yeah, i've used putty for years for just console ssh access, I'm looking for GUI apps so I can run, say, thunderbird remotely. I think i'm going to try realvnc since I found a guide that can remote into a running session for that. | |

| I grew up here | x11vnc on linux and tightvnc viewer on windows seems to work well, but its really laggy when it needs to update the window, such as browsing webpages, or even IMing somebody. Compression seems to be enabled, and the connection should be hella fast between a school comp lab and the dorms, so is it just the fact that 1680x1050 is too high a resolution to run? Does it always send the entire screen even if only a small portion has updated? | |
