When you intall other distributions can you configure the kernel yourself, or do you have to let it do it for you? I kinda like knowing what I have in there and what I don't.

If you install other distributions, they install a stock kernel that has been built by the distro team. You can do your own afterwards.

Edit: Unless you're doing Linux from Scratch (LFS) =)

Bah...I like my Gentoo. Installation is a bitch...but I feel so proud afterwards :P

You can do whatever you can do in Gentoo in other distros. I think it's silly to sit around and compile source code for programs for a meager speed gain.

Quite true, but if you're using Gentoo "to get a faster system" you're probably a bit misguided anyway

I don't know I'm thinking of trying out Debian or something. I have no problem with Gentoo, I just want to see what else is out there. Is anyone here familiar with Debian that could answer a few questions.

I've used Debian before. and that should probobly be a question
I currently use Ubuntu, and have a fair amount of experience with that too.
