So I posted before about this problem and it hasn't been issue since but lately it's been happening again...and isn't going away...

My parents have a wireless G Router set up for wireless and their neighbor has a wireless g in his desktop (they did it on purpose so he can bum a signal). He can ping the router but gets no response back. Then it says he is connected to the router but no internet can be found. The WHOLE time my parents have internet access with no hiccups or anything.... So I set them up on the same network and work groups and when he connects to the router he can see my parents computer and visa versa...but he still gets no interweb while my parents are surfing fine...

They both run Vista home or basic or whatever the standard one is on most household computers that come bundled together..... and my parents ISP is Qwest highspeed DSL...

I have Googled but get nothing but the basic problem solving stuff...and none of it works... I set theirs up the same as mine but they are having issues....while mine operates flawlessly....(knocking on wood now that I said that)....

Any ideas on what could be doing it? The signal is great as well...

By "he", do you mean the neighbor? Threaten legal action. I've done it before.

I guess you missed the part where my parents agreed to do it for him....

He is storing my parents pop-up sleeper camper thing in his yard...and to pay him they are letting him bum a signal....

So maybe I wasn't clear enough....

I need to fix it so he can get a signal consistently... or as much as possible...

Try taking a laptop to where his desktop is set up to see if it's a signal loss/strength issue, I'd also try looking on your router set up page and see if his desktop is listed as a client, but beyond that, is the network secured? I've found that computers on the fringe of a signal can get better connectivity if there's no WPA/WEP.

Can you clarify this? If he pings 192.168.1.1 does he get the response "reply from 192.168.1.1..." or does it say that it can't be found/doesn't reply?

If he does get a response check his dns settings and/or have him ping a server (4.2.2.2) beyond your router.

he can't access anything at all... I'm going to have him un-secure the network and try that...

UPDATE: we unsecured it and still got nothing... His network status shows him connected to the router but not the internet.... but when he tries to access the router (192.168.1.1) it won't load...which means he isn't even connecting to the router?...

He can see other peoples networks one of which I know is twice the distance from my parents house and gets just a strong of a signal...he doesn't have their password so he can't get in....but why would my parents have such a week signal compared to the other?...

You may need to update his wireless drivers or the firmware for the router. I can't understand how he can connect to the wap but not ping anything at all (unless he's set an incorrect static IP for some odd reason).

i had this issue yesterday where it said it was connected to the router but it wouldn't ping the router or go anywhere.

it was set to DHCP and getting a proper IP from the router but then it couldn't connect to it when I tried to access it...odd.

what ended up being the problem is that it was connecting using a bad WEP key. Strange that it even connected with a bad WEP key.

obviously this isn't the issue in your case as you have turned off security. certainly a strange issue. what is the signal strength that he is getting? if you take your laptop over there, can you connect? i'd probably update the firmware on the router and try again from scratch.
