So I want to try Ubuntu and learn about its functionality and all that jazz....SO I downloaded it today from their site (almost 700mb) and was going to install it on this 12+ year old laptop I fixed up.....

Before I do and royally screw it up....what kind of problems would I have doing it? For like sound drivers and such.... Do I need to find them and save them to a disk or something or is the functionality of them already put in...like Windows....

functionality is most likely already built in, but boot up the live cd and see, no harm in that

So the file I downloaded already I can run it "live" from the CD and see how it works before actually installing it on the system?

unless you downloaded the "alternative" install disc then yes, you have a live cd, so just burn the ISO to a CD and boot off it

Live CD is good to see how it will run but it will not give you alot of options. As for drivers you shouldn't have any problems . Not sure of you notebook specs. Once you get your OS up and running. You can use Synaptic packet manager for any thing you need to install. See if you can install Compiz. That will help you get cube up and running. I use Kubuntu, with cube it make multitasking soo much easier.

I don't think I did the alternative one...I went to their main site and clicked the download link. It asked if I wanted to just download or request a CD or buy a DVD or CD with it....

I remember something about different versions...like Demonize with Kubuntu... Is there one better for laptops?....

Once you have ubuntu, you can install Kubuntu later on it. Kubuntu is just a graphical flash on ubuntu with few modifications and addons. And once you get abit fluent in one of them you can switch between them. Just in case, here is a place that show a little comparison between them.

KDE and Gnome Comparison

I'm checking out the linky...thanks...

What about something like Xubuntu?

The laptop is so old it said it could only handle 128 memory (according to the spec sheets) but I have it at 288mb....it has 32 built in... with a 256 shtick....

So memory is an issue......

Xubuntu is the same as any other *buntu at the core, but the difference is it is lighterweight because of the X gui and less preinstalled applications, so if you have very low memory you might be better off giving it a shot, personally i'd recommend trying kde or gnome first though as they are easier to use in my opinion

I figured it would..... I'm doing the install now....or at least trying to....

EDIT: Freaking figures..... the cd-rom just went out on the laptop.....I can't even put a music CD in it.... and even thogh it has a USB port the thing is so old that it won't add it to the boost list as an option....

So I'm now using my brothers computer to test it. I built his machine out of spare bits and peices....so I figure why not.....so far it's loading well...

this thread kicked me into action, I've been wanting to install this for some time now.

The lady friend has a PC with XP on it, so I completely wiped my drive on my PC and installed the newest version of ubuntu (8.something)

The install went perfectly fine for me, and I'm playing around with it now....definitely a different feel from the Windows I've been used to but it looks like I'll have a fun time figuring it out!!

The best way is to look on Ubuntu forum, like specific items. If you google linux for beginers you get alot of stuff there too. You can download good books from tor.
You can ask here any specific question too.

If you're looking for scripting stuff specifically, try this guide.
