| Saint, Church of Ryanism | I finally got my cable internet installed (just moved up to Groton, CT), and it is already giving me problems. When the guy installed the cable modem, it worked fine for a few minutes, then came up with "limited or no connectivity." It looks to me like the computer just keeps searching for an IP address, and can't find one. I am running a router (Belkin Wireless-G 4 port router) with the rented modem (Motorola Surfboard cable modem). My ethernet port is an integrated (Realtek RTL8139/810x family fast ethernet NIC). It will just randomly drop off, be down for an hour or two, then come back up and work fine for a short while. It's pissing me off! I don't know what else to do. Any of you guys had this problem before? Oh, also... I'm running Windows XP Professional. Thanks in advance for any help! ~Will Courtier~ |

| El Chupacabra | Did the guy put a line attenuator on your cable line? If not the signal might be too strong. It'll look like a little barrel about 1 to 2 inches long if it's on there. I have also noticed cable can be pretty picky. You need to power down the modem and your router or PC if you don't have a router, wait for the modem to fully come back online and then power back up your router or PC. I would call your provider and let them know about your issues. |

| Habitual line stepper | Do you have SP2? SP2 is notorious for doing that, randomly. |

| Dont mess with old school | Just for clarification. It's the dsl modem that is searching for an IP correct? Do you have a static IP or dynamic? Like j0k3r said, turn off the modem (remove the power cord and coax cable too for good measure) then plug them back in. What are the WAN IP settings of your router? |

| Saint, Church of Ryanism | I ended up buying a Belkin Wireless network card, and that solved all of my problems. The problem (or at least I believe) is in the ethernet card in my computer. The internet now works much faster, with no disconnects. I believe that the problem was just that the ethernet card was having intermittent connection problems with the network cable. It seemed to only give me problems when I was doing many things online, or the computer was getting hot (when I was multitasking like crazy). Thanks for the help! ~Will Courter~ |
