I just formatted again and I can not access the workgroup, I tried to ping the other computer and it wouldn't go through. It did work before but I don't think anything has changed since.

I make myself laugh.

Go onto each computer and check their IPs. When you format it changes your IP sometimes. You could also use something like Agry IP Scanner to find all devices on your network.

Check the firewall settings on all computers. You haven't given us any info. I'm guessing that your first need to ping the other computer(s), then try to access them via UNC mappings.

Perfect. Fuck. Ok stay here and get... butt fucked by 12 Neanderthals. Bitch

If you can't ping another computer on the network, try to ping loopback(127.0.0.1)

EDIT: What soulassassin said too, check firewalls settings.

The firewall is disabled on both the computers, the service isn't even running.

As I said in my first post, I tried to ping the other computer I got the IP from 192.168.1.1. All the data was lost. When I ping the loopback no data is lost average time of 0ms.

I have Hamachi running and I couldn't ping my computer on there.

Are you using static IPs or DHCP? If you are using DHCP, are you able to ping the DHCP server after it assigns you a valid IP?

Is this Windows XP or Windows Vista? If it's Windows Vista, you might be configured for a public network location which turns off any kind of network discovery.

I thought you didn't get a ping response from 192.168.1.1?......

If 192.168.1.1 is assigned to a PC, I'm pretty sure that is your problem right there. 192.168.1.1 should be assigned to a peice of your network hardware, not a PC.

EDIT: You are going to have to post up some more detailed network information, because this isn't making sense to me. When you ping the other computers, are you using the hostname or IP when you do a ping?

IF you are using the defaults

if you happen to be running a server version of windows, WINS takes all the pain out of window's file sharing. thats why i originally setup a server at home

XP Pro - Router (192.168.1.1) - Wireless Laptop

I can ping myself (XP Pro) and the router, but not the laptop (yes the laptop is on and connected to the network). I can not see any networks under My Network Places, and it gives me a error saying I do not have access to the network and to contact my network admin.

You may need to enable Microsoft TCP/IP v6 on both machines, and possibly IPX/SPX/NetBios. I've had problems not being able to access machines on my network and installing/uninstalling those usually helps if you are in the same workgroup as the other computers.

You'll need the same username/password on both machines if you're getting access denied messages.

I'm a douche and didn't read everything.

The network works on the laptop, it can see the workgroup its in but the main computer can not see any workgroups at all (not even the default one it is in). I tried pinging the main computer from the desktop and none of the packets made it through, so I tried pinging the router and it worked.

Bullets:
1) Desktop can not see ANY workgroups
2) Desktop can not ping the laptop
3) Desktop can ping the router and the loopback
4) Desktop can not ping the laptop through Hamachi
5) Laptop can see the Workgroup it is on, but not the one the desktop is on.
6) Laptop can not ping the desktop
7) Laptop can ping the router
Internet works fine on both

Fuck smileys!

Are you sure there isn't any firewall/security software installed on that desktop? I don't mean to seem like you don't know what you're doing but the only time i've seen that is when NIS 200x or McAfee Security was on the computer and required the firewall to be configured.

Clean install, Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service is turned off (set to manual). I don't even have nod32 running yet.

What are the workgroup(s) and IPs of the desktop and laptop? Also, does the laptop have a firewall enabled?

Edit: IP info should be irrelevant because they both can get online

Can you boot them with a linux CD? See if they can ping each other. That's strange that everything works except they cannot even ping each other. And no firewall..

Both computers are running linux and they can ping each other. They are on different workgroups, but I should be able to access either work group from the my network places.
