I've got tunderbird installed on my desktop and my laptop, both with the same email accounts and settings. My problem is that when i click "check mail" in thunderbird on my desktop i get a "connection to server timed out" error. The frustrating thing is that it dosen't happen on my laptop. Any ideas? I've researched a bit online and the only solution i find is to download this "affinity.exe" Well needless to say i think thats a load of shit to need another app to just make thunderbird work.

Has anyone had this problem? If so did you find a solution?

Desktop: AMD 64 dual core +4200, asus mobo
Notebook: Sony Vaio, Intel Centrino

I've gathered that it's a problem with the way windows works with the amd cpu, i figured out if i just change the setting to "run in win 98 mode" on the compatibility/properties tab it "fixes" it. but thats lame, amd/ms/mozilla/somebody needs to issue a fix

It's not a Mozilla specific problem. For example, there are several games that have problems on dual core systems (TFC, GTA:SA, Far Cry that I've tried). Assuming you're running XP, try installing the AMD dual core processor driver from here. I think there's also a hotfix for XP SP2 related to dual core problems around somewhere. I'm running Win2K so I can't install the driver to see if it helps, but setting an affinity mask is always a simple workaround.
