Whenever I play a game (COD2, CS: Source, HL2, EQ2, etc.), even for a few minutes the computer will just have a quick jitter of sound, the screen'll go black and and then the computer will shut off/restart on me and claim that the CPU temerature is too high and it'll sit at a black screen for like 15-30 minutes before it goes to the sign-on screen. I don't see why it does this. My system specs are: (XFX) AGP GeForce 6800 Ultra (256MB), AMD Athlon 64 4000+, ASUS A8V Deluxe (AI Series) Motherboard, 2 gigs of RAM, a 430 (or 480TruePower PS...Can't remember which one), 74 GB Raptor (for Windows XP Home SP2 and other progs.), Western Digital 160 GB for games and such.....And I guess those are the only specs that really matter. Well, hopefully one of you can give me the info I need to fix this problem...Thanks.

what kind of thermal compound did u use? what kinda hsf??

its doing that because your cpu is overheating. you can check in the bios to see what the shutdown temp is set at. get a better hsf and some arctic silver

You that maybe, just maybe, your computer is trying to tell you something. You know those darn computer machines and their obscure error messages.

Maybe you should look at the CPU temps? It doesn't take a fucking genius...

I'm a bit of a noob to the computer world...So what's hsf? And my CPU temp. is like 79-8something degrees C....Just from booting it on, isn't that bad? And what's arctic silver?

Ok, "79-8 something" is way too high. A HSF is a Heatsink/Fan. What type do you have? Is the fan working? Did you assemble this computer yourself?

What's with all the hostility? I was just asking a simple question, and I already stated that it was only after a few minutes of gaming.

holy shit that horrible

hsf is a heatsink and fan, its what goes on your cpu to cool it off. arctic silver is a thermal compund, it goes inbetween the hsf and cpu to ensure proper heat transfer. check out www.newegg.com for parts. chances are you have a stock hsf with the shitty thermal pad.

but yea 70-80° C is horrible
50° is high

What do you think would be causing it to be so high from just booting it up?

How can just having stock fan and etc. make the temperature jump that high from just boot up though?

well stock hsf's are sufficient, but not having good thermal paste or no thermal paste can cause it..

poor heat transfer means it will overheat. not that hard of a concept.... whats your cpu fan's rpm's?
