Does Leopard Have Basic win32 Loading Capabilities? - OSNews.com

Quote:
On the Wine mailing list, there is some interesting information on Leopard's apparent ability to load basic Windows binaries. "When tracking down a crash in the kernel32 loader test, Dmitry found a bug in the Mac OS loader when Wine tried to load his dummy PE file. Upon further research I found that the Mac loader seems to have its own undocumented PE loader built in. I did some further testing with a Windows binary and got some really interesting results." The first thought was that this was a remnant from Mac OS X' EFI support, but upon further investigation, this really seems like new, Leopard-specific behaviour: "This is new to Leopard. On Tiger, dlopen rejects PE files as expected. The Wine testing that Steven was originally trying to do would probably not crash on Tiger." Apparently, Apple is trying its best to hide this behaviour.
Interesting!

OK, so educate me on this - does this mean Leopard will be able to run Win32 applications natively? I don't get it.

Isn't that open source? Where's the source code? They are probably trying to hide it because they don't want to distribute the source. If it's in there, hidden or not, they have to distribute the source.

No, not yet at least.

WINE is open source; Apple's custom loader would not be.

So it emulates Windows, aka WINE?

Damn, I hope there's some development going on with this. There's only one thing preventing me from loving OS X with all my heart and soul: A news reader with yEnc support. In windows I swore by XanaNews, but on my macbook, there's nothing I can download that even compares to XN.

And yes, I tried running it in Darwine, but it just errors out.

No actually. They're all pretty bad to tell you the truth. MT NewsWatcher works, but its just incredibly dated and hardly usable. There has to be something better.

*Shrug*

They were the first set of results on a Google search for yEnc. Oh well, at least you still have Parallels.

Fuck Parallels, Boot Camp baby! I guess I'll dual boot my Macbook eventually, maybe to finally start playing with Vista.

I'm using VMware right now and the results are pretty good. Dual booting is a pain in the ass for me.

It can load DLL files is what I understand.

Here is a discussion on it. Seems really interesting what they're trying to do!

Ah, I thought about doing that, but there was an error during the process and I almost shit myself thinking I fubared my OSX install and boot record. It was just a clumsy process, so I just gave up and deleted the windows partition. As-of now, everything still works. I'm quite thankful for that.

I just finished downloading Parallels and will be giving it a go in a minute. Hopefully that works better than Boot Camp.

It will work, but if you're using Leopard, get VMware instead.

Just a little bumpage to say that I love VMWare Fusion. It's so seamless and fast. XanaNews runs at nearly native speed in fusion. Props to Tweak3D!
