I recently got Toshiba 1805-s254 Laptop for free from my friends shop, its specs are 1ghz P3, 256 Ram, 20GB HDD, dvd player and 16MB Trident graphics.
My troubles started when I first got it and had a hard time getting it to turn on, when I finally booted up windows 2000 everything went very rough. Either the screen would black out completely or the whole thing would shut off when coming into windows 2000 setup. I managed to get windows 2000 installed but it runs very slow. programs freeze, system lags, doom 95 wont run at all. I guessed overheating but I changed the thermal paste with radioshack goo, and cleaned out the heatsink, Ran Memcheck, Harddrive check and everything passed. Can anyone give me an idea on what to look for next.

Power or graphics issue? Did you wipe out the hdd and do a clean install?

you should be able to feel on the bottom if its overheating. check the BIOS, that thing might have temp sensors. besides that, it sounds like the mobo is probably dying.

Well wait hold the phone......you know what I smacked the bitch and now it turns on! I noticed it seems to run alot cooler today, and also faster. Could it have been my choice of thermal paste?? Should I try thermal tape instead?

check the fan on it and make sure it's moving air.

I had a P3 550 slot1 that had a cheap 3 fan/hs and it'd act up till I smacked it around a few times. The fans were bad and the jolt would bring them to their sense. Your problem may be a simple as a bad molex.
Don't you just love it when you smack them bitches and it turns 'em on?

go into the bios and shut off all the extra crap you don't need first (parallel port, serial port, modem, etc)

then update your drivers. that has to do with devices conflicting, if you can turn off some stuff in the bios it almost always fixes it.
