| Dont mess with old school | So I got that cmos (reserve) battery replaced and I bought a new battery as well and I thought I would be good to go but nope My system randomly shuts down and I read that it might be a motherboard issue so I bought a new motherboard and I still have the same issue. When on battery the system randomly shuts down, it does this if I'm in the bios or if I'm in windows. I've tested the memory and it past memtest 86 with no errors. It was a free laptop but I can't justify spending any more money on it especially if I don't know what exactly the issue is. Does any one have any other possible causes? |

| Senior Member | Not sure if this will help. A friend of mine had mac book it randomly shuts down. The problem was some wire went by the heat sink. As it got hot the sleeve melted can caused Short and it use to just shut down. As it cool down the sleeve will contract and you can boot PC. So may be you running in similar problem. Also did you try diff power supply, or take your chip and may be check it on some other system. |

| Dont mess with old school | I don't think it would be the power supply since it only does it when it's on battery. The only thing I have tried is a new motherboard but I get the same result. So it has to be a battery or another bad mobo. |

| Tweak Minion | While it's on, does the charging icon appear in the taskbar or is it strictly running offf of the battery? I repaired my nephews Dell because of a problem similar to yours. The female DC input from the charger was bad. Now his was mounted on the mobo. If your DC charging jack is NOT on the mobo, I would check that. If yours is ON the mobo then disregard this since you've already replaced it. |

| Dont mess with old school | When it does run it shows that it is running off the battery and not charging. The jack is on the mobo Is there some way I could fully discharge the battery? |

| Tweak Minion | Have you tried just running the laptop without the charger plugged in? That would do it. If you have a volt/ohm meter, Check the DC output of the charging transformer. If it's a consistent 14VDC or a little lower while wiggling everything in between, you know the transformer is ok. With the charger unplugged from the wall, check for a short in the cabling or in the male (round) plug itself. This could be a $3 radio shack fix if it's a bad (shorted) charger plug. |

| Dont mess with old school | Sorry I wasn't clear. I was basically saying that the charger is not the problem because it only has issues when not plugged in (running off the battery only). The charging port on this laptop is actually pretty sturdy compared to other laptops I've seen. |

| Tweak Minion | No problem. When the laptop shuts off while I guess just on battery power....will it start right up afterward and if so, how long does it run before it dies again? Shit.....you just may have a crappy battery! Does it shut down while the charger is plugged in? Do you have a seized cooling fan? |

| Dont mess with old school | It wont reboot, it just shuts down. Sometimes I can turn it on right away and it will get back into windows and other times it will boot but shut down right after doing the bios check. In any case the system is not warm or hot. When the charger is plugged in it works fine and doesn't shut down (with or without the battery plugged in). I bought the battery off of ebay and they gave me a refund and let me keep the battery so it's on loss to me but before I invest any more money I just want to be sure it's the battery and not anything else. |

| Globe Trekker | Ha! My boss sent me a C640 3-4 years ago and I shipped it back to him! But then again I was trying to do a lot more than surf the web with it. |

| Old School "Lurker" | Check the battery contacts on the laptop-side for corrosion or loose connections. |
