A rule of mine though is that if I get infected at all, I reinstall Windows. Period. I don't run an AV or firewall and haven't been infected by any mal/spyware or virus in probably 5 or so years. I attribute most of that to using non-default programs like Firefox, Thunderbird, only downloading things via torrents, etc.

That may not be a smart option for everyone, keep in mind. I run a very light Windows install and most everything is on another hard drive.
I got this same exact virus off of TPB about a week ago. Most torrent sites are being bombed with malware. It's like there's a bunch of anti-piracy groups trying to screw with everyone.

We've got a confirmed infestation that will likely result in a reimage of the machine and yet anti-virus software is still a bad idea? I didn't run it either until I got a broadband connection, after which I consider it essential on Windows XP and older. Running with your pants down is just retarded.

Depends on the malware you get. The XP Antivirus 2k8 or w/e it's called isn't considered a virus and because the user "installs" it the program lets it through. A combination of combofix and trojan remover are the best things to get rid of this shit (outside of a format)
