I fuckin hate this part of after a fresh install.

Ive been told and read countless times ffdshow is all you need. Well, i downloaded the latest compile 20051121 and it gave an install error.

So before i start installing, deleting crap to botch my system, imma wait.

The thing is, the current wmp9 version cant even play some of the wmv files i have. They get hung or cant sync to the audio. My last install consisted of WMP9, installed ffdshow, then upgraded to WMP10. This setup played absolutly everything. My porn collection consists of every format available, lol, so i would know.

BUT, WMP10 is what caused my folder column issues, as i read around and found out.

So should i try reinstalling ffdshow the older alpha version and somthing else? I just wanna do it right the first time.

I'm in the same position.

If I install that will I be able to use the codecs it installs on other players?

Other players are not necessary. VLC is probably the best player there is.

VLC is nice as a one stop shop. However I'm not sure it installs the codecs or keeps them in its own library. For the latter you can alternatively try the Matroska Pack for use with all players. My only gripe with it is that it doesn not support .mov files so you have to still go get the quicktime alternative.

I use the K-Lite mega codec pack with out FFDshow and Xvid, then i install those two seperatley. The i install the WMP8 Codecs, WMP9 Codecs, Qicktime and Real Alternative, and finally the Windows MP Bonus pack. I never have any problems with not playing video.

I make myself laugh.

I just have standard WMP 10, with Quicktime-Alternative and Real-Alternative, and the DivX codec, and I've not run across anything that won't play on my system...

None of those support sub-titles.

The alts do, if you set them to use VMR Renderless mode. I don't use subtitles, so that doesn't bother me much.

I refuse to install windows media 7 and higher and I really hate having quicktime and real player installed on my computer so anything that will replace those I will be happy.

I use ffdshow, Media Player Classic, Quicktime Alternative, and Real Alternative. I can pretty much play anything out there. I have only one complaint, and that's the fact that there hasn't been an official ffdshow release in quite some time. If you have an AMD CPU, you need the MSVC 7.1 version of ffdshow.
