I have a hard drive that was preinstalled with XP. I've removed all the partitions that I can but one remains. It's an eisa partition which I have no access to and has no drive letter.

Disk management is unable to delete this type of partition. According to ms knowledge base the diskpart command should be able to delete it however when I try it tells me that this may be a necessary partition and cannot be deleted.

To complicate things even more, this is a 2.5" drive located in an external USB enclosure.

Does anyone know if a program like partition magic can delete it? Or if I can access it and delete it with a linux live cd?

me and a lot of people have started using knoppix (or w/e livecd) for partitioning, the window's partitioner is pretty cranky w/ anything but window's partitions

What tool in knoppix do you use? Is it command line based?

There are several different ones, some command line based (eg cfdisk, parted), some GUI (eg QTParted)

You don't actually need partition magic, you can use your Windows XP disc to delete the eisa partition on your computer by booting into the Windows setup and deleting it that way.

To do that go here:

Ultimate Ultra-Mobile PC Blog: Deleting your Q1 EISA Partition

This should help. Thanks

Glenn.
