Beware of wifi leeching neighbors. I would make sure the router only accepts the mac addresses for the computers in your network for starters.

You cannot see it in network neighborhood because there is nothing to put it there: you'd need a server that can resolve names on your local lan...

Uh no you don't...one of the machines will take over the role of master browser. You might be confusing DNS with machine discovery on a local workgroup.

that does nothing at all. all you need to do is catch one packet and spoof its mac address. i would suggest setting up WPA and use a very strong passphrase

https://www.grc.com/password
a good site to get a nice long and random pass

Obviously just limiting by mac address isn't enough. There are several routes to insure security. I've never been able to spoof a mac address with a single packet. WPA's can be cracked, but it takes several hours of constant packetsniffing. He should basically use wpa in combination w/ limiting macs and using strong passphrases. May want to ditch the default MSHOME workgroup name while he's at it. Oh and disable the default ADMIN user account too.

every packet sent has a mac address attached to the front of it so it knows where to go so spoofing is very easy. anything can be cracked if the user setting it up doesnt know what there doing. WPA is very strong but you must you a good passphrase.

for example:
o!6,7-Xaud94c<fcqq<q/!d3$}*hnU}w 8e>e..ep&F{-<U|`',";22(R}19Q8M

there is not enough time in your life to crack that passphrase
seriously

and as far as i know WPA cant be cracked via sniffing you might be thinking of WEP which is easly cracked
