ok guys i have never some accross these before. ok i will try and keep it simple. i am in uk..

friends house had a power surge, since then their pc is not doing anything, not switching on, no lights, dead,
so i get it and assume psu, i strip the system so it is just motherboard, cpu, ram, i then attach a known working psu,, still nothing ??

ok so i decide to try and save the data from their hdd to my pc, i piggy back their hdd to my system, i turn on and the psu makes a funny noise and shuts down ? i imddiettly remove friends hdd from my pc and try to start it again,, same problem ?? now whenever i connect either my or friends psu to start my comp up, it turns on without switching it and wont turn off, no signal on screen,

my theory is both psu's are screwed, and hoping i have not damaged anything else on my system ??

anythoughts would be great thx....

richard

Get a known working PSU and test both machines with the suspect hard drive out of the picture. If that works I would frankly not put the hard drive back in EITHER system. Tell your friend he's a dumbass for not backing up his data and that he owes you a lot of beer for screweing up your PSU.

If the hard drive controller board has some sort of short in it I can totally see it tripping your PSU. I've never seen it happen personally, but it's possible. My guess is that a higher quality PSU might be a little more resistant to that sort of thing.

Blown fuse on 12v rail?

Say goodbye to our beloved planet. Because there is
alot more money to be made in emitting greenhouse
gasses, than curtailing emissions.

Get out of the box, then recycle it.

I haven't seen the rails fused individually before.

and the HD frying the thing is entirely possible, I had that happen with a cdrom at work last week.

Maybe, not way to tell until you have the new PSUs. You can visably look over and smell the board to see if anything is burnt, but it's usually hard to tell.
