Gateway - Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - M-6862

I just bought this pretty sweet speced laptop for 524 bucks at Bestbuy. I'm not opening it until I sell my current Macbook on ebay which should not be a problem. Anyways I can't help but feel that Gateway is a crappy laptop company. I'd like this if it can last at least 2 years and not die. I can't say that they're good or bad really though, I've never had or used one.

I can't remember what magazine it was I think PC MAg or something like that, but they were rated as one of the lowest for quality and customer service, if it were me I'd return that fucker and get something that has more quality like a lenovo or a mac pro, but thats just me.

Learn something

Acer bought Gateway. Acer i think is third or fourth in top economical good quality computers. I don't know what they were like before, but for now they are very good. I have a gateway tower that is 7 years old, i use it for storage purpose, it runs just perfectly fine. And i just bought there p-7811 fx notebook. So far runs great. Look great and feel sturdy. Competitive pricing on notebooks of high specs. Nice cheap warranties.

EDIT: I would get 2/3 year warranty on that notebook you bought ThatHideousStrength. I did the same for my notebook. 170ish $ for two year is not bad and you have almost a year to extend warranty since you got 1 year warranty when you bought.

How do I go about getting it from Gateway? Sorry, I haven't opened it up yet because I need to sell my current laptop.

Just register you can do that either online or call them you will have to give the SN that's on the box or the back of your notebook, your name and address. And just ask you want to buy extended warranty. What i really like when i got mine. They told them the 2 years will kick in once my First year that i got from buying the notebook ends. Warranty will cover any problems that happen from wear and tear. Since i just wanted to game on notebook around my house parameter so i am not worried about damaging the unit.

EDIT: Man its must not be easy to control the impulse to opening a new toy so you can play with it. I have great control on my impulse but me around electronics is just kid in a candy store. lol.

Yeah same here but if I open it and my Macbook doesn't sell I'd be screwed. I'm sure it will though. Now that you made me think about it I want to open it haha.

Quality and customer service are superb compared to back then. Compared to some HP laptops I looked at, Gateway's build quality was definitely better.

Ugh I'm in a sticky situation. I'm thinking about keeping both laptops. Using the Macbook for my music creation and using the Gateway as my games and development stuff. I just got my last paycheck from my internship which pays for the laptop pretty much. I have some shit to sell as well on ebay.

Yeah, compared to HP/Compaq these laptops are golden (thank you Acer). I had the same opinion of Gateway before I bought, and couldn't believe I was buying one. 6 months later and I'm a fan. This thing is fast, rock solid, and the build quality was very good.

Gateway is in a good position right now. I used to HATE them back 5~ years ago, but they're very good computers right now.. My moms boyfriend scored a Gateway desktop w/ Tri-Core Phenom, 6GB Ram, 500GB harddrive for 550.. The thing is solid.

Gateway laptops are currently the best value on the market at the moment. I paid $1300 + tax on a P-6831 FX in Jan and it had it's faults (software) but I worked them all out and upgraded the CPU and now it works like a dream. I couldn't ask for better hardware specs for the price I paid.

Just talk to Krod. He paid through the nose for his Alienware, which is certainly faster and fancier. But he's had to have warranty repair twice. And the performance difference is probably 10-15% at most. Even the Dell offering in this class of laptop cost twice as much and don't offer much more in terms of performance. Gateway owns the mid-range laptop market right now. I'd love to see their market share numbers compared to last year.

Awesome picture MSP.

I've had nothing but good success with Gateway computers in the past. My roommate just bought a gateway laptop for something rediculous like 400 bucks from Bestbuy and it has been working perfectly for 6 months now.
