I had a nice score at work today, we had an abandoned Dell latitude D600 with a centrino processor, 512ram, 60gb ect.. Customer brought it in about 3 months ago and wanted the motherboard replaced. The customer came to his own conclusion that the motherboard was bad because the laptop would not turn on even with the charger..no lights nothing. Plus he didn't want to pay the extra 49.99 for us to do the diagnosis.

So we didn't even look at it, we just got a price for the motherboard and labor...something around $500.00 or a bit less I can't remember. Customer said "no way Im going to bring it somewhere else, ill be there to pick it up soon" 3 months later never came.. The shop I work at has a 30 day period in which we will hold your laptop/computer if we do not here from you, if you do not respond we will destroy your data and despose of the computer/laptop any way we feel fit.

So today the boss said I could have it, I took it home plugged it in and wait whats up with the power supply?? The little green light shuts off as soon as its plugged into the laptop? possibly a bad power supply aye?? or maybe a short in the motherboard? Im hoping its just the power supply because I need a working laptop... Either way it was a good find here

What do you guys think?

I was a Dragon force fan before Guitar Hero..

$500 is about right. We charge $100 to install laptop motherboards and the actual part can be anywhere from $300 to $400.

I would say about 65% of are customers are complete morons.. they call 5 times a day ask how their computer is doing and when its finally done they take forever to pick it up and pay. We had a women call today asking how her desktop was doing, but she suddenly realized she hadn't given it to us yet.....I hate the public

The lappy he's talking about is a dell. I checked ebay for some and damn they are expensive. I never have to buy them because we can't resell them...The customer/company always buys them after we look at them.

Well the motherboard is toast, its got a short somewhere and I can't pinpoint it. Even with motherboard completely out of the machine and everything including Ram, cpu and the modem taken off it still shorts out the power supply. I was hoping it would be a dead power supply but I tried my friends and got the same thing.

Found a site that has a refurbished board for $150 and that doesn't seem like a bad deal considering the laptop was free and everything else seems good on it. I just hope the site is legit, maybe ill do some research on the site and order on Monday.

I've scrapped a bunch of D600s at work. They are decent laptops, but I wouldn't pay $150 for one. Part it out, sell the parts, etc. With an entry level laptop available for around 400 bucks, 150 bucks on a used D600 isn't a good investment.
