Ok I got some problems! As I was installing this sound card there was some boot up problems so I reorgainzed things. This time it actually recognized the IDE devices and was booting up normal and then it said DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK and I am like oh crap! So what do I do to get it back to the way it was.

I know I need to insert a windows system disk but what all do I do from there. Formating is not a option because this is my parents comp and they would kill me if I lost there info.

I don't understand how this happend because all I did was take out some cards and spray out the dust

if you use xp or 2k you can insert the cd and go to the recovery console and type fixmbr. that may fix it.

Boot the computer with the Windows XP CD. (I hope you have it) At the first screen, hit R to go to the recovery console. (I hope it does not have an admin password). From the prompt, issue the following commands:

chkdsk /r c:
fixmbr
fixboot c:

Type exit and restart the computer, see if Windows loads now, if it does not, go back to the recovey console and issue the following command:
bootcfg /default
(if this one does not work for you then type...)
bootcfg /rebuild

Bootcfg will search the drive for a few minutes, then come up with a list of items you can add to the boot menu, it will probably only come up with one result, add that item. If you had to use the bootcfg command, Windows will give you a choice of operating systems next time it boots. To get rid of this, start windows, go to Start -> Right click "My Computer" -> Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Under "Startup and Recovery" click Settings. You should get a list of your boot options, leave the drop down box on the default value, then uncheck, "Time to display list of operating systems". Blamo! No more having to choose your operating system at the boot menu. ^_^

yea well actually I had some more problems just a few minutes ago. The same problem occured and I think i've got it figured out now. I think it's this SB live platinum card that caused all the problems. It's probably faulty or my computer just couldn't handle the extra card in it. This is one of those SFF machines so the PSU isn't the largests but I think it should be able to hold it. Anyways it's working now and I am going to blow up this card for causing me to learn or something.. I dunno I am tired and out of it.
